Tires
Getting tired of the RTF's. ( they get more noisy by the mile )
Looking at Falken 452/453 or Michelin PS3. Have:18x8 and 18x8,5 294 OEM rims. 225 front and 255 Any point in going up to 235/265? (on the 294 rims) I have 18mm spacers on the rears (for looks) What happens with the TPM? As it really doesn't messaure pressure but tirespeed it should still work? All kind of tips, experiences appreciated. Thanks |

Changed to a set of Falkens about 500 miles ago and love them. They are quieter; the car handles better in the dry and in the wet and the ride is much more comfortable. They were also a lot cheaper than a set of RFT. I'm off to the continent in a few weeks and one of my main concerns was that if I got a puncture then I would get stranded because most places do not keep RFT in stock. I should also say that I also bought a small compressor and a bottle of repair liquid just in case I get a puncture.

TPM stay the same with any tire. TPM measures tire pressure, FTM measures wheel rotation speed.

Do they have the hankook ventus v12 evo in Sweden?
Car and Driver gave them a great review as a budget tire. Dry grip exceeded that of the benchmark/baseline micheline PS2s. http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...12-evo-page-10 I have them in 19s on the 35is and they're a great tire for the price. |

They use the ABS system to measure the rotational speed of each wheel. If a wheel shows a slow and continued trend of a different rotational speed to the others and its own past history then the computer will signal it as a potential slow leak / flat tyre. I haven't heard anyone confirm what happens with a blow out on the E89. HankHenry said the dash indicator came on with a blow out on his 335i - perhaps they use a similar system to the E89.

The US manual has two options - see attached images. TPM and FTM. The Manual in Australia (and I imagine in other places) has only one, and it is a standard feature, not an option. Its called RPA for Runflat Monitor, and the descirption is the same as the FTM. The dash display in the iDrive calls it the FTM. Perhaps this is a common standard outside of the US, which would explain a lot of the argument over this topic over the last couple of years...

So either system should work with any type of tires.
Doc, thanks for clearing this out. |

I switched all four to non-RFT tires at around 25K (which is when my fronts were getting bald, and having already changed the rears at 14.5K). I went to Bridgestone Pole Position S-04s. I have to say this was one of the best things I've done to the car. Runs much smoother now and the performance is terrific. Plus the cost is a LOT less than if I went with four run-flats.
