M3 v8 lacking in Torque? Here's a solution -
I was watching Barrett-Jackson LV the other night and this thing came up on the auction block --- threw up in my mouth a little bit -- why people, why????

A local guy has one with a similar setup and the car is actually pretty cool. I don't have a problem with engine swaps, especially in an older car like this. To each his own.

That engine is superior to the BMW engine in every way. It's lighter, makes more power, gets better mileage, costs less to maintain.

I'm considering something similar for my '92 325i.....the stock engine is very tired right now.

Can't deny their is a certain beauty to the chevrolet small block V8. That said I still prefer the screaming small displacement engines (V8s in particular) of the world. Kinda like I also prefer ALMS to NASCAR too (yes, even though I know NASCAR engines rev over 8k also). My ideal project BMW would be very similar to the SBC in an E36 (or Z3) swap that people do - except one change. I would get an old BMW M60 or M62 V8 and build into something race spec-like. Say 400hp@8k RPM. And yes, I know I would end up spending a lot more than an SBC, but a lot less than an M3 "crate motor" too. |

Same reason fat women wear spandex...Because they can!
I think the swap is awesome...just could do without the exterior sticker/paint job.

Swaping Engines
I think I will stick with the engine on the platform it was made and tested to run on. I was side by side with a 911 at 130 miles an hour. Surprised the 911and I think in another 15 seconds, I could have hit the magic 155. This was on HW 940 in TN

He's not entirely wrong. Have you ever driven a car powered by that engine?
It's pretty fantastic. It certainly is cheaper to maintain, more reliable, lighter, more powerful, and easier to extract power from.

I couldnt agree more......I know all the owners of e9x M3's will call BS on this, but I'd much rather have a LSx motor in any car than the bmw V8. What does the M3's V8 do better?????? not a damned thing. If BMW put an engine out like a LS3 everyone would say its the best engine ever regardless of the tech. Show me one stat other than hp/L that the M3's V8 is better at.......... hp/L means nothing to me. HP and TQ regardless of the liters is what matters to me, its also funny that the LS3 is far more efficient even with the extra ci.

u stuck with a 911, meaning non turbo? Thats not surprising, they are not fast. 997 S is pretty damned nice car though. You see, if you had a lsx swap in your M3 it would be more powerful, lighter, and more efficient. If the swap was done properly i'm willing to bet you'd like the car a whole lot more. In fact, I think a tuned LS3 swap w a DCT tranny would be AMAZING

Though the LS7 could rev to 8000 RPM safely I hear. Just that it didn't make anymore power above 7000 RPM so GM kept the redline there. The Gen V Small Block will be interesting though. |

you can mod the top end of the LS3 to rev a lot higher and it will still be cheaper than the M3's V8.
