CAR Magazine: BMW "0 Series" (UKL1) lower compact class car in the works
The latest issue of Car Magazine has an article about new compact class BMW in the works. It's known internally as the UKL1 (Untere Kompaktklasse (lower compact class)) and is supposed to target the Audi A1 and Mercedes A-Class. It will be based off the 3rd gen Mini and is said to be coming in 3 variants -- 3 door hatch, 5 door hatch, and 2 seat roadster. Power will come from 3 and 4 cylinder engines. Source: http://jalopnik.com/5375496/bmw-to-b...formed-0+class Er...um...What? This is really getting out of control. How are they going to have two cars built on the same chassis aiming for the same market segment that somehow don't cannibalize each other's sales? I guess there are enough stupid people out there that will pay BMW prices for a Mini to make this seem like a good idea. This kind of badge engineering would make GM blush. |

bmw. please. for the love of god. cut this fucking shit out. you pull out of F1 to make more peices of fucking garbage like this? the 3 should have been the smallest car they make. thats it. enough of this shit. a z2. fine. but not a bmw based on a mini.
what, are they gonna reveal a RWD mini? they want to build a car for everyone. enough is enough.

I'm fine with the X's. I'm fine with the 1er. I'm fine with Mini's. But between this and the 5GT, I'm not sure what's stupider. Blame Audi though, with the A1 coming BMW is looking for market share there.

They're coming. BMW will find a market for people who need a car bigger than a 1er but smaller than a 3er, etc.

When is -1 series coming out? And what is the difference between 0 vs. mini. Hey its okay because its for the sake of efficient dynamics. Maybe there will be a M0.

this is correct. before the e90 was produced (or while they developing the E92/93), the coupe was to be dubbed the 4-series. the idea was that sedans were to be odd numbers and coupes were to be even. and it would have worked too. 3,5,7 sedans. and at the time the 6 was the only coupe. but as an E92 owner, im glad they kept it the way it is.

Great. Within a few decades, we'll have cars ranging from the -8 Series up to the 8 Series. And they'll have a X, M, and Z for each model.... Maybe the negatives will be for people who like the 3 series size, shape, etc, but wanted it to look backwards...there comes the -3! And the -Z3, -X3, and of course, -M3.
Isn't BMW becoming the old GM with all these niche cars for tiny or made up segments? Even if the R&D costs are very low because of the chassis-sharing, I wonder if production and marketing costs will allow them to make any net profit. |

I see what people are saying about overlap but isn't that more of a problem for BMW than the consumer? If they let quality slip, sales will be sure to follow. Personally I think they've gone too far into luxury and have lost their sporting edge so I say, bring on the lighter, nimbler, simpler options. I have absolutely no use for an X5/X6M. A gayed down Mini with RWD and a BMW warranty doesn't sound too bad to me, I don't really care what its called.
