What's Your Least Favorite Automotive Redesign and/or Refresh?
Another stolen idea from Jalopnik, but I thought this could be a fun discussion.
So, what is your personal least favorite automotive redesign and or refresh? and why? Here's a few of mine. Third Generation Ford Taurus The first and second gen were incredibly popular, the best selling car in America, and they weren't too bad looking either (especially in SHO spec), then came the dreaded third generation. Ford overdid themselves with all the curves and circular theme, car looked like it was melting in the sun, and its radical design eventually caused its downfall too, slipping to the #3 spot in US sales. They tried to correct their wrongs with the 4th generation, but it was too late, the Taurus had lost its spot at the top. Sixth Generation Hyundai Elantra Facelift The sixth generation Elantra when it first came out was a really nicely designed compact sedan, especially for the price. Simple and sharp, it actually looked more upscale than its price presented itself. The facelift however, is a disaster of design. One looks like a nice car, the other a Pokémon. Every time I see a facelifted Elantra I can't help but think how changing one aspect of a car completely ruined its design for me. 6th Generation BMW M3 and 2nd Generation BMW 4-Series/M4 Of course this was an obvious choice so, in order for everyone else to not post it I thought I would include it. You all know why, one is classic BMW, the other is a mishmash of tasteless trends and other brand's design cues. Last edited by stein_325i; 01-04-2021 at 10:02 PM.. |

7th generation Pontiac Bonneville. GM used the same name Bonneville from full side 6th generation to the midsize 7th generation. Liked the 8th gen Bonneville.
2nd generation Mustang shouldn’t have been called a Mustang. Though I’d certainly like to have a pristine 2nd generation Mustang to have now as a daily driver. |

Ferrari 458 -> 488.
F12 -> 812 superfast F80 -> G80 New 2 series is awful. 3rd gen acura TL was a stunner -> 4th gen TL looked terrible.

The second generation Ford Mustang. The best thing about that car was that it appeared with Farrah in the original Charlie's Angels.
VW New Beetle. I like the original. There is an ET racer out here who races one that's super cool. I was sorry to see them try to bring it back. I've been in one, it seemed to be a fine car, but the nostalgia and the new car just do nothing for me. |

Agree on the TL. Just like the Taurus, Acura completely butchered the car and hasn't really recovered (at least for their sedans, until now maybe) due to the controversial design. The 3rd gen was a great car, the fourth though was huge and ugly. That beak was just awful. I remember my neighbor back in the day got one and the first modification she made was switching out the grill for an aftermarket one.

Agree on the spindle. Although I didn't mind the early models, where it was pretty simple, when they kept adding more and more it started to look ridiculous, although the LC is beautiful and the grill works there in my opinion.

G8x bar none. The single biggest disaster in automotive history from generation to generation in regards to styling.
I also hate the follow up to the Toyota MR2 MKII Turbo. That Spyder is an eye sore. |

2003 Maxima to 2004 Maxima. Not that the predecessor won fashion shows but the Maxima went from a decent 4 door car to something atrocious.

100% agree, this was era was the start of Nissan's fall from grace and the start of using CVT's in Nissans which we all know how that turned out.
