whining sound when i step on the gas - s35i
does any one experience this problem? especially in the morning when the motor is still being warm up, step on the gas pedal will produce a whining sound.. like a faint fire siren sound that goes higher in pitch and down accordingly with the rev around 1.5k to 3k rpm.
Running on jb3 for a while and hopefully thats not the cause of it. |

Sound coming from the back or the rear? Sounds like the rear fuel pump. Does it whine after the car is fully warmed, driven, then stopped at a light?

Based on the fuel pump threads in the M3 forums, it could still be a fuel pump problem. They could always stick in another faulty pump.

I have the same problem on the 3.0...posted a thread elsewhere on here. It's a whine that happens between 3 an 4 thousand revs. Narrowed it down to be the aircon....
When you hear that whine, keep the revs constant and swith the aircon switch off - it will immediately disappear. and come back when you switch it on again. Only really happens when the aircon compressor is running constantly...mostly on hot days or first startup and the temperature being set low. Car's going in next week to check. Please confirm if you can replicate the same ? |

Open up the hood and can you hear a whine near the airbox? The noise can really echo through the car and misdirect you on the noise origin.
Take it in to bmw. I had a tech put a stethoscope and discovered it was the rear pump that is pending failure, not the hpfp. After the replacement, whine gone. |

Took my car in to the dealers for the aircon ( I think) whine on Wednesday past. The couldn't find an issue they say. On picking it up the evening the engine management light went on intermittendly again....so it stayed there.
Yesterday, the EML light was sorted but now the aircon is not functioning at all anymore. They will dismantle it today to see if they can track the issue. Seems like it was afterall the aircon to blime and the whinning sound was tell-tale sign of the issues to come. Will report back on the progress, but as of now I'm not impressed with this car anymore! |

I had a whistling sound in the past on my 135i after a tune install.. and gets louder on acceleration. If I'm correct, we both have the same N54 engine. Check your diverter valves that it hasn't popped off. Just re-tighten it. The extra boost from the tune has done this to a few folks on 1addicts.

i have a feeling, and only a feeling, that it is not the air conditioner. i believe that when you turn on the ac, it opens the vents and that is allowing noise from "somewhere" to be heard. when i turn off my ac, the whine goes way way down, but if you listen closely, it is actually still there. i have tried opening the hood and listening for the whine, but the engine is so loud it easily over comes the whine making it impossible to hear. therefore, i believe it is quite possible the whine isn't even coming from the engine bay. owners have had various ac parts replaced to no avail. so what is it? i have no idea.

1. There are a lot more posts on fuel pump issues ... than there are fuel pump issues.
2. Old phrase: " turbo whine." Not saying that a few folks don't have A/C or HPFP probs, but suspect the 'problem' is just the turbos spooling up and picking up a resonance at certain RPMs and load levels. Suggest 'drive it like you stole it' and deal with real issues if they show up in some way other than could-be sounds. (Experience now with 3 N54s and so far bomb-proof.) |

I currently drive an '09 135i (twin turbo) but I test drove a 2011 Z4 35i last week which I understand has the new N55 engine. I immediately picked up on a similar whining noise as mentioned above, however I simply chalked it up to a bigger and louder turbo. If you find out it's anything else, I would be surprised...

OK, thanks for clearing that up. I thought so, but the dealer looked it up and told me otherwise after I mentioned the noise (wtf?!). Well, still, I heard the whining and don't really care for it --especially now after realizing it's not the turbo(s) spinning up. (And don't someone comment now about just turning the music up, because that's a crap response!

anyone of you got anything new to share? I have always noticed a whining noise when the aircon is on during hot weather too.
However since this didn't happen much until recently so I never really thought about it, and didn't realise it could be an issue until I saw someone posting about it. |
