Exhaust farts
Guys, I took my car in for a faulty seat sensor and they kept it over the weekend. Well since I got it back my car sounds quieter. No farts, barks or anything. almost like. 335i. Do you think they fucked with my software?? On purpose or by accident?? Or do you think something else is wrong??

Maybe because the car was in the shop for a while and you haven't driven it for that period of time. I am guessing that passing some time, the sensation of the exhaust sounds will return.
For example, I driven a noisier NAPA truck all day years ago. At the end of the day, I hopped into my '98 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer and it was much quieter and it felt like driving a different car unlike before work. After some time passed, the noises and sounds of my truck returned back to normal. Or your Z4 had broken-in further as things are smoother now than it used to be. Or a different brand of gasoline was used? Just throwing some ideas out there. Last edited by MDLFCS; 06-27-2010 at 06:20 PM.. |

If the seat sensor needed to be mapped into the software , they would have updated your software without charge if you were behind a revision (or two).

I would like to know how the dealer made your car quieter, if nothing else. It is a luxury sports car after all
It is funny that you describe your exhaust as farting, but as I am looking back, yes, my car do fart a lot! It must be the fuel! |

Actually I get the "farts" when I'm in Normal mode and shift fairly hard, they don't seem to be as prevalent in sport or sport+. It must be the slower shifts in Normal doing it, either that or the car recognizes an old fart behind the wheel when I'm in "Normal mode"
I get great gas mileage in Normal but sh*t, that's no fun....

i was told (this last week), but not sure i believe, that when they update the software on these z4's they update ALL the software for all the modules (ie, they no longer update individual modules). In other words, they are given one large update file from bmw these days. If true, then this could be the reason for the change you noticed. It could also explain why you go in to get something fixed and something totally unrelated breaks....

yeah, i've revved it all weekend, but my car used to do it all the time, even the split second you took your foot of the break and unto the gas pedal. even in sport + when i downshift, it doesn't fart and bark like it used to, but now that you guys mention it, i think maybe i should reset my tranny, maybe that's the reason.

Is the fart just the DCT blipping the throttle on down shifts?
The throttle is programmed to do that in the 35i, but (they tell me at BMW) not to do it in the 30i auto. Just a though...

well, my 30i manual burps, belches, farts, and i think giggles too...i dont know what happened to yours but im pretty sure it was intended to be there at the start. i am wondering if any detrimental underlying issues could cause this lack of gastric orchastration? i mean shit...that the car's irritable bowel syndrom is at least 1/3 of its total charm. i would demand bmw to make my car fart once more!

Had my car in for a software update (to make the LPFP stop whining) and noticed that my car's farts now last about 3 times longer than before. She's always been farting, but now we're talking about farts that'll make nearby sailors blush.
Not sure if we're talking about the same gaseous behaviour however as my girl farts whenever I take my foot off the gas pedal (moderate RPMs, not accelerating or anything before that). By the way, I'm not complaining or anything. I kind of like it. |

i think it was coincidence with my car that high humidity and high temperature kill the farts.... kinda like pepto for the car... but anything cooler than 80 and no humidity and she's farting up a storm... plus with the medical pinch on the valve that controls the butterfly flap and now she's extra loud! love it.

The 30i does burble nicely, but only in the sport mode, and the Eisenmann exhaust doesn't hurt either. But after the software refresh last year it took about a week for the farts to return.
