Extended Warranty question.

Hello, I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has used an extended warranty before. From what I understand, BMW's extended warranty is called VSC, and Fidelity seems to be a solid third-party option.

My main question is: when you use your extended warranty, do you only pay the deductible, or have you run into situations where you had to pay more?

For context, I previously had the Audi Pure Protection (Audi’s VSC), and I found out the hard way that the deductible wasn’t the only cost. The dealership claimed that the labor hours covered by the warranty didn’t match what they actually needed for the repair, so they charged me for the extra hours.

Does BMW do the same thing? Or is this kind of situation dealership-specific? I’ve heard it can depend on how the service manager at each location handles warranty claims. Just trying to get a sense of whether this is common with BMW or other warranty providers."

Best advice I can offer is get the extended warranty pamphlet and read the fine print.

My info is the extended warranty coverage is not up to any dealer employee.

When I researched extended warranties and talked to senior techs they told me invariably if a car came with something that resulted in an extended warranty claim they would be bombarded with questions about servicing, usage, etc from the extended warranty company seeking any justification to deny the claim.

The techs told me they answered the questions honestly and emphasized they could not influence the extended warranty company. The claim was honored or not based on the fine print of the warranty coverage document and that the vehicle owner had followed the servicing requirements laid out and had not engaged in usage that nullified coverage (tracking) and had not made any prohibited modifications.

I've had issues with BMW's extended factory warranty on my wife's X5. It's now been twice they've claimed something wasn't covered, most recently, 'leaking' rear differential bushings they flagged during a regular service.

Next time, I'm personally going with my wife to drill in because they've tried denied covering very standard items multiple times now. Not sure if it's an issue specific to our local dealer.

back when I had a Lexus GX, I bought the Lexus factory extended warranty. When the engine oil pan had a slow leak, Lexus USA also denied the claim, saying that it was not caused by a manufacturing defect. They suggested that I had used the wrong engine oil, "bumped" into something, or drove in hot weather(Florida). The GX was always serviced at the same Lexus dealer since day 1. I didn't bump into anything(oil pan and lower cover totally free of any scratches/dents). Florida being too hot? Well, then why does Lexus allow their cars and SUVs to be sold in the state?

After half a dozen phone calls and numerous emails, they finally agreed to covered it under my Lexus extended warranty, but only as a "goodwill gesture"... needless to say, that was the last Lexus I ever bought.(had 4 other Lexus SUVs and cars before that) They lost my business permanently because they wouldn't pay for a $150 oil pan replacement.

"goodwill gesture" my ass!!! I had the same thing happen with Whirlpool on a $3000 refrigerator that wasn't cooling properly. The fine print of their extended warranty stated that I needed to have 3 service calls where they replaced the exact same part and the issue still wasn't corrected. If that occured they would either replace the refrigerator with one of the same value or give me a cash payout for 75% of my purchase price.

The real problem was that the refrigerator had a design flaw which caused it not to cool properly. It was a French door model and the top section would constantly freeze up behind the meat drawer. I did a Google search on the issue and discovered 6 different Whirlpool service bulletins that they had sent out to their repair people regarding my cooling issue which were issued over the course of several years. Each bulletin recommended replacing a different part or several parts but never the exact same parts like it was written by their attorney in the fine print. This issue affected all of their product lines which included Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Jennair, etc which all had the same interior cooling design.

After threatening them with a law suit they finally paid me 75% of my original retail price. Needless to say I will never purchase a Whirlpool product again and now have an LG refrigerator in my condo.

Buy a third party waranty from the guy who is a sponsor here. I got one from him and it covered a new rear diff and gas tank. My dealer had no problen with getting payment, and the repairs were covered 100% besides my $250 co-pay.

If I'm guessing correctly, that's the same place I got my extended warranty from too. Unfortunately, my local dealer has hassled me every single time I've tried to use it.

My dealership has given me no problems using my third party service contract.

I had the BMW Platinum Warranty with no deductible on my 2020 X5 40i. I never had to pay out of pocket. There was one instance where the warranty would not cover a repair. It was the second time within 12 months that I needed this repair, so they insisted that the dealer cover the second repair under their 12 months parts and labor warranty for repairs. The dealer covered it.

Just providing another source for the BMW (Safeguard Administered) Extended Warranty (ESP).

I called around to my local dealers and even tried one of the frequent references on this forum and one of the locals went out of their way to earn my business.

His initial offer was $400 less than my second best negotiated offer and over $700 better than the out of state source. I nudged him for a little more and he ended up dropping it another $300.

This is for a 36mon/36k BMW Platinum Ultimate Protection plan with ZERO deductible on my wife's '23 X4. My out the door price was $3k and his service was excellent. I highly recommend him if you are in the market.

I assume the rates are different for each model and you should also note that the new BMW ESP takes effect on the date/miles you buy the warranty, not added on to the factory warranty as before so wait until you are down to just a couple of months before your factory warranty expires.

My sister in law just bought a 2024 CPO X7 M60i and I would like her to buy an extended warranty that goes out as far as possible. The dealer selling the car tried to sell her a 7 year warranty for $10k (from in service date) but that gives her only 2 years beyond what she has — 1.5 years factory and 1 year CPO.

I referred her to Trenton Gibson at Highline and his aftermarket warranty is about half the price. But also only 7 years and I would prefer 8 or 10.

I had not previously read of warranties running from the warranty purchase date rather than the in service date, but I duppose it is another way to market them. The factory warranty is 4 years so a 3 year ESP is just another way to get to 7 years. The advantage seems to be you can buy it later. The dealer told my sister in law that if she did not buy the warranty yesterday when she was buying the car, she could not buy it later. Seemed like a mishearing pressure sales tactic to me so I told her not to buy anything extra from the dealer — just the car. We can source any extras later.

I support your approach. And if she were instead to put that $10K aside in a high-interest account and draw on it only for repairs on the X7, she’d likely be well ahead.

Slightly different but the same approach we’ve used and are using. We bought the full and extended warranty for our 2013 X3. Other than required oil changes and tires, we didn’t need warranty work done. It was a BMW with only 39K miles. It did everything we expected and more. That’s exactly why we purchased it. For 2026 X3, we will shop for the extended warranty at that time and we will know from how we’re treated for required maintenance, where and how we shop for the extended warranty. BMW has always treated us fairly, but it certainly wasn’t cheap.

When you’re buying a luxury car, you don’t expect crap from the service department.
