Back from the dead...Toyota Celica

Just a rendering, but they would kill it if they actually brought it back and it looked like this....

Final product never looks anywhere near as good with these things. They'll water it down so much, just look how the MKV started and what we were left with. Talk about disappointment.

I do like the nod to the All Trac with the hood scoop. That was the 1 car from back in the 90s I always wanted which eluded me.

Rendering looks great. New Celica will be built on today's Supra platform?

Looks like a mildly photoshoped Supra (2024 sales of 2,615 units) or GR86 (2024 sales of 11,426 units).

Sadly, the sales of both have been underwhelming. Hard to imagene Celica selling much better than GR86.
All 2024 Sports Car Sales Droped 14%.

New shared platform with MR2, and possibly Subaru.
Coming in 2026, or so they say.

What Toyota needs to do if they want to actually sell some of these things is put them on a platform that can be shared with a sedan/wagon/crossover. Nissan did this to IMMENSE success with the FM platform that underpinned 350Z, and basically all of Infiniti for a while.

It's tougher to make that work in an underpowered vehicle like the 86, but that's Toyota's own fault for picking a partnership with Subaru who has had the same or lower power levels since like 2004. Put some actual power into the vehicles and you can make a sedan version without a ton of issues.

I'm lost where this car fits. They have the Supra and 86.... there's a market for 3 sports cars? How about a drop top?

The Supra looks great after some mods which this could be a great candidate for as well.

I'm sure it will be FWD with a hybrid 4 cyl to go up against the new Prelude, just like they did in the 90s and 00s. They could one up Honda by offering an AWD version like the old All Trac.

Renders like these always make me wonder why manufacturers don't hire many different artists to render their models before taking the designs to a large panel of the desired demographic and choosing from there. I've lost count how many times I wish I could have bought the original, non-manufacturer render (and not because it's slammed).

Guaranteed that the new Celica won't look this good, and it's just sad.

Agree. I wonder what their expected demo size is. Can’t be too many that will get one.

People who are looking for a FWD hybrid type "sporty looking" coupe maybe? It's currently not available in their lineup and like I mentioned above, with the new Honda Prelude coming out perhaps they are putting out a competitor (not sure that either company will sell many though, the 90's nostalgia people have moved on or want clean examples of the actual older models...myself included).

agree, seems most of the renders on the interent look so much better than what is actually produced....

like I said, if Toyota actually made the car I posted they would killl it in sales, but it will probably end up looking like that orange one a few post up

Regulations, especially pedestrian impact, often determine the look.

A good reliable competitor to the GTI, Integra A spec and civic Si would be a good addition in the Toyota lineup.
They could even use the Rav 4 plug in drivetrain but with less mass to move around and sportier suspension
It doesn't have to be fast , but it needs to be affordable and under 35k
There currently isn't a Toyota that is on sale that does this

Isn't this the entire brief of the 86?

I used to be one who advocated "Toyota reliability," but recently I have questioned this. Particularly in their sports cars, the 86 has the infamous Subaru boxer engine oil pressure/starvation issue when tracked, and they have been claiming abuse when tracking the car even though it comes with a 1 year membership to NASA (not the space NASA, LOL). So, they say go take it to the track, but don't bring it back when it breaks. Then there is the GR Corolla. Granted, only 2 or 3 instances so far, but engines spontaneously self igniting and burning the car to the ground. One famous case has denied warranty because the owner "exceeded 100mph."

The supposedly reliable rumor sources claim the Celica should be coming with a 2.0L turbo, so that reliability has yet to be seen.

I understand that Toyota used to have a stellar reliability record because they would continue to use proven tech, like their V6's which were bulletproof, but relatively ancient in design.

I guess we will see how things fare.

Imagine you died in the mid 2000s and came back to life to the world we have now. Talk about a disappointment.

It DOES have to be fast IMO. Otherwise, buy an 86

I’m betting 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.7.

Then why wouldn't I buy a Supra?

It makes no sense.
