This is the Z5. The joint BMW and Toyota developed Z5.
It will be very advanced for the segment. The chassis incorporates multiple composites including CFRP. The soft top is re-introduced to have more weight reduction, although this time a proper Coupe will be introduced. The Toyota twin starts as a Coupe then a Cabrio. BMW will be the other way around. Its design in profile is influenced by the Vision ConnectedDrive/328 Hommage concepts. Although Z5 is longer, proportions will be stretched. Interesting with the night photographs is that at night they remove the camouflage For testing.

It's supposed to share with the new Supra , which would be awesome. From the looks of this test mule it looks like it will geared towards the retirement crowd, not sports car crowd. Even for early prototype there doesn't look interesting.

If you look at the photos there is enough there to clearly identify the BMW grill and tail light shape that is infamous for BMW. As a matter of fact looking at the light refraction from the night photos there is enough to see the hood line, shoulder lines as well as pronounced hips. the photo does not have the shape of the prototype rendering though (which i think is good). However, something tells me that this version will be a cross between the E85 and E89 platforms. Of course all of this is judging merely by the lines that we can discern from the photos herein.
Notables: 1. grill seems similar to E89 Z4 2. tails seems to E89 3. top similar to E85 4. hood lines similar to E89 5. hip lines cross between E89 and E85 but more specifically 6. the splitter looks like the splitter from the E89 3.0i not the 3.5i 7. the scope air intakes could be similar to the E89 3.5i. 8. If the platform were only a 4 banger then i would not expect to see dual exhaust there. (correct me if i am wrong) 9. same A pillars as the E89 10. The mirrors look familiar. So while they may not be an exact match to either E89 or E85 they are similar to e89 version. Interesting: 11. the vehicle sits like the S2000 with a forward slope downward. Kinda like a cat saying here look at my butt. More: 12. Rear diffuser is molded into the bumper 13. Bumper extends only a little past the rear deck. 14. the trunk (boot for my English friends) is much smaller. So all in all this vehicle doesn't feel like a real redesign (like we had with the Z3 to Z4 model) And that is about all i can see from these photos. Anyone else have anything further they would like to add?

C'mon; get real! This is a car that's replacing an 8 year old model, has been in development by BMW/Toyota for 3 years or so and you think it's nothing more than a cobbling together of old E85/E89 elements?

I like what I see in the rendering. However, I really like my E89's folding hard top. I hated the rag on my '00 Z3 ...... too much upkeep (read = lazy).
I do like the idea of a true coupe ......... so it will all work out well. You can expect a lot of lost sales to the Toyota side. |

I'm not really seeing anything appealing, but the camo probably isn't doing it justice (as it's intended). I'm not crazy about the rendering, but again it is just a rendering. I prefer the curves of the e89, and unlike those that are more pro toward weight savings, I really like hardtops.
Softtops imo only looks good on the 6series, and even that, still not fully into it. A coupe on this might totaly change my mind - but then it's a different beast all together as it's no longer a 'vert. But I do remember a rumor where BMW was getting away from all hardtops: http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars...ble-hard-tops/ ... and if that is the case- it just makes me glad I have an e89. |

Ahh but there is no denying the facts that i pointed out. And i noticed that you didnt ragg on my S2000 comment either. I would have thought that would be a sore spot if any. Dont get me wrong. I am all for change, I have had a 02 ///M roadster, 06 Z4 E85 and my current 09 Z4 E89. So change is no surprise to me. What i am saying is that from the lines that are visible even through the camo it lacks some distinctive new lines making it a new breed like when they went from the Z3 to Z4 model. Being true to BMW I would have expected no less. BUT only time will tell.

What I don't like about the Z5, more than the soft top, and it is very apparent in the side by side above, is that the cab is more centered in the car whereas the Z4, both E85 & E89 is set further back with a longer hood. The profile of the new car has the same proportions of a 2016 Mustang. It is too sedanish.
