Couple of factory warranty/service questions...
So having not yet had any factory/dealer service experience on my "new-to-me" 2013 35i, I've been watching the miles-to-service counter get closer and closer to zero and wondering exactly what the drill is. I'm assuming that as the counter approaches "0" I will get a "service required" message on the dash at which point I take it in for a free service apt. I'm also assuming that would be the time to run any issues I'm having (the car will have about 27k miles on it) and that there will be no questions asked about items like a groaning top mechanism (only apparent when the top is up, but quite annoying) at that mileage. Also, do I need to wait for the counter to get to zero, or will the dealer allow a fudge factor if I bring it in a little early and not charge me for the service?

What service exactly is approaching 0? Your iDrive (if you have one) will show you what's coming up. Generally you can bring it in up to 1000 miles early.

No i-drive, so I'm not sure if I can access exactly what is coming up (or how I would do that). I'm assuming it's in need of regular periodic maintenance (lube, oil, filter) and the specifics are in BMWNA's service data base. The car has kind of a cobbled together service history as it was purchased as a CPO in January of last year, driven 7 months, traded in for a new Mercedes and then purchased by my wife and me after being serviced again by a nearby BMW dealer. So I'm not sure what it will need exactly. What about the top noise? That's covered by the bumper to bumper and isn't subject to any kind of mileage restriction for "adjustments", right?

sounds like the oil change indicator. that is the one that displays when you start the vehicle each time. And yes i would make sure you tell them about everything that you are experiencing so that they can take a look at it while you are there.

You can still use the red pixelated screen in between the gauges to see service items. You can scroll using the button at the end of the left stalk, and the little thumb switch
You can also just preemptively schedule the car for a service and dealer will figure it out when the key is read |

OK, maybe someone can translate from 'the high-German' for me. When I turn the ignition on I get the picture of the car and the reading is 1500 miles and the date is 10/2017. I've been ignoring the date and assuming the 1500 miles was referring to the next oil change (since we've put about 8500 miles on the car and it was serviced before we bought it. However, when I get into the service info via the left hand stalk, it shows 8000 miles to the next oil change and 10/2016. The only thing that shows 1500 miles appears to be some kind of a general service icon with a picture of the car up on a rack. Everything else (front/rear brakes, oil, etc) is way out there time and mileage- wise.

For Bimmers manufactured after 1999 (excluding the '99 E36), the first Inspection 1 service is set at 30,000 and then every 60,000 miles after that, with second at 90,000, third at 150,000, and so forth. It's a 30k mile service, which would make sense as the car has almost 28.5k on it. Of course that doesn't jibe with any of the other service readouts, but I guess overall mileage drives the schedule rather than individual service components. Thanks nick! |

Then for the pad sensors they can have a false alarm (i.e. extrapolate wear rates incorrectly and call for service when it isn't needed) A good example of that was my wife's 335, where I melted half the pads in a failed attempt to DE the car, and the iDrive suggested 3k miles left, but there was still 50% pad material remaining.... iDrive needed to be reprogrammed, so a service of the service internal computer was needed even though the actual service wasn't... I guess it is too old fashion just to visually inspect the pad material |
