Part # for TPMS?
Just ordered new wheels and tires, and now I need to get a set of TPMS. Have a few questions.
1) What is the part # for the TPMS? To my understanding, BMW changed frequency and type of TPMS sensors used... My car is a MY 2011 with a build date of 04/2011 2) I don't want aftermarket brands, but don't want to splurge for a BMW logo either. My understanding is that Beru/Huf makes the OEM BMW TPMS. What would be a good place to get them? BavarianX has them for $230, but I also heard TireRack sources Beru TPMS as well, and I'd imagine they would be cheaper. Recommendations? 3) Do I need a special bracket to hold the TPMS onto the wheel, are do they just stay there? These are aftermarket wheels, and not sure if they include a TPMS "slot" or if you need a bracket to hold it in (read about some cars requiring special brackets). Kinda new to changing out my own TPMS.... |

Think I might have answered #1 myself, but someone please confirm.
There are 2 "types" of TPMS (most common ones anyway) Part # 36106790054 - Which is for all vehicles 2011 and up and Part # 36236781847, which is for 2006-2010. and these Part #s are universal across the BMW line. That is to say, all 2011+ BMW (be it the Z4, M3, 7 or 1) use Part # 36106790054. Is this correct? Edit: How are the Part #36106790054 different from the BMW RDE012 sensors? Edit: I think I got it... RDE 012 is the model # for the Beru TPMS, which are the ones that are re-branded by BMW to be Part #36106790054, yes? Last edited by CedarZ4; 05-26-2013 at 02:26 AM.. |

I may be missing something here but your existing TPMS will work with any aftermarket wheels as it works off the ABS to monitor wheel rotation than actual tyre pressure loss. When the tyre loses pressure the wheel rotates at a different rate to others which sets off the monitor.

Tim - Yes, I am aware that the TPMS will work on my aftermarket wheels. However, they are still on my other wheels and I was planning to sell them as a set. That is why I am looking at the possibility of buying another TPMS sensor for my new wheels, and so to avoid having to...
1) Drive to garage with new wheels + tires in my SUV 2) Drive back home 3) Drive to garage with old wheels on the Z 4) Get new wheels mounted and balanced then swap with the old ones on the Z 5) Drive home 6) Drive SUV back to garage 7) Pick up old wheels and going back home (for the 3rd time) Also, in regards to TPMS using rotational speed. I believe in the US, we have direct tire pressure monitoring, as opposed to the rest of the market (like in the UK) where the Z gets indirect (rotational speed) tire pressure monitoring. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.... |

Yes, TPMS measures pressure (tire pressure monitoring system), while the older FTM measures rotational speed.

I believe the US is the only market in the world that has direct TPMS on the Z.
Back on topic, can anyone confirm the part # for me on a 2011 Z4 with a build date of 04/11? Don't want to buy the wrong sensor for $300... |

The design changed on 9/10 build dates. Your build date is the current model TPMS.
My 35i build date is 3/10. I have the early design and not compatible with new sensor system.
