Black Z4 35i ESS Detailed
I finally did a full detailing of my E89 Z4. This is something I wanted to do for a while
The car is a 2009 Z4 35i with 28000km on it. The paint job is original Black II, with other words a flat black. The Interior is in colour Canberra beige with black flooring's. The car has all ready gotten wet sanded last year, so the paint looks still really good. Because of this, I have been laying most time in the details of the car. I painted the brake calipers around Christmastime and the car got some paint dust on some of the surfaces, so this had to go Sorry for my Norwegian/English Products AG Wheelcleaner AG Tar & Glue remover AG Show shine AG Supersheen AG Radiant polish Cartec spraywax Cartec splash Cartec excellent PFTE wax CG Bare Bones undercarriage spray CG fabric guard CG Silk shine MG metal polish MG leather cleaner & conditioner MG Last touch Scholl S30+ Scholl ICE SW Opaque SW metal polish SW Cleaner fluid proff SW Insignis V2 SW Autobahn Green BN Leathermaster protection cream Black wow KCL copperspray Babyoil Equipment AG medium hard wheelbrush AG interior cloth AG black polishing pad MG velour brush MG brush MG black soft polishing pad MG polishing-ball on a drill MG DA machine SW buffing cloth SW Detail brush SW leather brush SW wheel brush Krefting applicator sponge Washing sponge Spray gun with water and air Kercher carpet cleaner spray air gun Makita Rotating Inspection lamp Kercher vacuum cleaner 3M masking tape Torque wrench See through film Heatgun I start with some pictures of the wet sand that was done last year: It is important not grinding on the edges One panel of the time The result is a much more even paint job, that looks a lot more glossy Some of the equipment used on the wet sand job Then it was time for a real detailing job: Started first with some dirty wheel arches Front Rear Autoglym medium hard wheelbrush was used together with Autoglym wheelcleaner on the details. SW metal polish was used on all bare metal parts MG brush with Autoglym Tar and glue remover on the plastic surfaces CG Bare Bones undercarriage spray was sprayed on the plastic After 15min, Bare Bones had dried and rests was wiped of with a cloth Brake calipers was newly painted, so they only needed to be polished with SW Opaque wax for matt clear coat The wax was applied with just fingers to get a nice temperature Center of the brake discs was painted/polished at the same time as my calipers was done. So just some copper spray was used The result of front wheel arch Rear wheel arch My summer wheels got a nice clean before winter, so this time it was only polished with AG radiant polish. This one have a really nice cleaning effect Inside of the wheel Polish wiped off Wheel bolts in a bath of Cartec spray wax Result wheels Then I drove the car into the car wash Used some foam AG Glue and Tar remover sprayed on the surfaces from windows and down A bucket of water with Cartec splash soap and a washing sponge was used to get the car clean (And yes I know that a sponge is a "No go", but this paint was ready for a correction anyway) All details was cleaned with SW detail brush and Cartec splash Cleaning around the boot is always hard, so I had to cover up a little bit Detail cleaning in the engine room was done by detail brush and AG Glue and Tar remover Inside the tank lid detailbrush og AG Glue and Tar remover was used to clean it Engine room foamed and degreased Finally the car was dryed and placed in the dry/polishing department The first move was to take the seats out for å good clean with air and water Leather was cleaned with a cleaner called Green BN. A 50/50 picture All leather in the car was cleaned as the seats All buttons and tight places was flushed with moist air and a dry detail brush All surfaces was cleaned with Green BN and AG interior cloth All the leather was impregnated with Leathermaster protection cream. This one gives an natural matt surface to the leather The velour flooring was sprayed with Green BN MG velour brush used to get all dirt out of the carpet To get better access, the throttle pedal was disassembled. As I thought, it was really dirty behind it Kercher carpet cleaner was used to get all dirt and soap from the carpet Flooring finished Pedals was cleaned with a brush and airgun. These will go next week anyway, have bought new ones After cleaning the floor, it was sealed with CG fabric guard Some new custom made velour mats with beige leather edges was mounted in the car The engine room had all it`s metal parts polished up with SW metal polish Plastic and rubber was treated with CG Silk shine Every painted surface in the engine room was polished with Cartec excellent PFTE wax. This one can be used on plastic and rubber, so no problems with white polish marks on plastic surfaces Engine room finished I started the work in the boot with detailing around the battery with AG show shine Painted surfaces around the battery was polished with Cartec PFTE wax Battery box finished All painted surfaces within the boot was polished with Cartec PFTE wax The boot itself, was cleaned with Green BN and AG show shine Then it was the boot equipment that had to be detailed The bag for the original tool kit was cleaned with SW Leather brush and green BN Polishing the tool kit with SW metal polish Result of a cleaned toolkit The Service map was also cleaned the same way as the bag for the tool kit The warning triangle cleaned with AG show shine Wind shot cleaned with Green BN Then the paint had to be corrected. The Z finished masked A soft MG pad and Scholl S30+ with a speed of 1500 rpm on the Makita machine was selected Inspection of the paint showed a very healthy paint But on the bonnet you can easily see the difference after a 50/50. Some scratches in this area, but mostly the difference in colour is due to paint dust from my caliper paint job A lift is nice for my back  In some places, it`s really hard to do a correction with the Makita, so MG polishing ball is a nice tool to use Finished with S30+ After S30+, the MG DA machine was used together with a soft AG pad and Swissvax cleaner fluid proff. This combo get rid of all holograms on the car Some CG silk shine was used in different places under the car Underside of bumpers front and rear was polished with S30+ Exhaust mufflers and tailpipes was polished with SW metal polish Results Air bumper vents was given a nice finish with AG Silk shine SW Insignis V2 wax was used as the top layer for the paint. This one is really easy to apply and wipe off with the SW polishing cloth Black wow was applied on all exterior plastic surfaces The grill was dismantled and MG metal polish was used. This one is really nice on chrome The inside of doors was masked and M-door sills taken off Makita machine with S30+ inside doors Cartec PFTE wax was used inside and under doors Inside of tank lid was detailed with AG show shine Result MG leather cleaner & conditioner was applied on the M-door sills. I have noticed that this one gives an really nice finish on plastic After that, the aluminum parts where polished with SW autobahn The inner plastic door sills also got a layer of MG leather cleaner & conditioner Result inside doors SW autobahn was used again as a last finish on the wheels , AG polishing cloth to wipe of wax AG Supersheen tire dressing was picked Wheels tightened with a torque wrench to 120nm Any traces of wax in openings and edges was tracked down by MG last touch and SW cloth Plastic cover under front window was sealed with MG leather cleaner & conditioner Wiper arms was polished with SW autobahn wax Result Windows was cleaned with Scholl ICE Since I got me a newly painted 35is rear bumper, I had to protect it against stone chips from the wide Breyton wheels. Applying protection film on the bumper gives me a better sleep at night Cutting the film to the perfect size Then I sprays on a little bit of water that containing a drop of baby oil The film is on and just pushing the air bobbles out Then I heat the film up with a heat gun and stretching it around the corner of the bumper Some air bobbles are still there, but they will disappear over night Then finally finished after 28 hours of hard work Thanks for looking

Amazing! I love your eye for the detail!
I never polished my Baby with a machine, anything I should read before going to work? Which equipment to pick? I was kind of busy driving the first year, I could not find the time to take care so much,....shame on me But I will do so this season! |

You get a much better result with a machine. But you also can do some damage to the car with a proper machine. You have to be careful with your speed over plastic, like bumpers and stuff. The paint can be burned When it comes to equipment and products, its so much to pick from. You just have to try some different stuff. My personal favorites for use one a machine is Scholl products. But then you have different polishing pads for almost everything. Pads can give the same product big variations. Its simply too much writing, just go trying it out

Yes, have done this in the past. It is really not hard to do. With a strong polishing machine, bare metal will be chrome. But on my Z it is not the right thing to do

I've never seen nor heard of such a thorough detailing... just incredible.
How many days were spanned in the 28 hour effort? I just washed & waxed the car yesterday and now I feel like a lazy ass that doesn't deserve the right to drive it. |
