Anyone come from an E92 M3 to E89 Z4?
Hope I don't get flamed for this, I'm curious to see how many of you have gone from an E9X M3 to E89 Z4 and if any regrets?

I purchased a e85 z4 30is made in 2008 after I came back from Die Welt May 2009 when they rolled out the new sDrive Z4's I just fell in love with the car just was not prepared to put out that much cash for a 2009 at the time. I kept my e46 M3 build in 2002 as well as our DD a Jag X-Type at the time. All went well with the three cars until the wife kept complaining about the traffic jam in the drive way. So I sold the e46 M3 (still regret that today). Anyway I traded the e85 plus some of the cash I got for the e46 for a slightly used 2009 e89 Z4 ... Loved both the Z4 cars, with the e89 I went all the way from eastern Canada to California did the Route 66 trip and loved it. Eventually it brought me back to the ///M3 ... If they come out with a Z4///M car I may just switch back to the 2 seater a Roadster or a Coupe no matter. Would be nice if the ///M Division Designers and Engineers come out with a two roof design (soft and hardtop) that be great, they can sell a storage option for the hardtop (like a stand or a rigging that mounts on the garage ceiling) that would be cool. The ///M3 as you know is an all around fun car as yo well know, a Z4 has such great lines I have to say I do miss the e89 and might just get another down the line (perhaps hide it form my wife in California and pretend it to be my mistress heheh - at least the wife cannot complain about traffic jams in our driveway). Will they penalize you at BMW for early return of the e89? Just wondering here.

No regrets because they are completely different cars... 1) The M3: a GT that is almost a sport car. The most involving and funny to drive car i had in my life. If i close my eyes I can still ear the intake sound of the V8 revving up to 8.3k, the brutal upshifting (DCT, manual mode) the perfect and super fast downshifting approaching a corner (DCT, manual mode)... The first time i drove the M3 i thought: this is THE CAR! As a reference when i switch to the M3 i was coming from a 2010 Cayman S PDK. IMO, the M3 is better. The M3 is really REALLY gorgeous to drive: great NA V8, great chassis, great steering, great feeling @ the track. An angry beast. But... not good looking for my tastes. A bit boring aesthetically speaking. 2) The Z4: Beautiful !!... the best thing money can muy in terms of look, versatility (retractile hard top). I saw her @ the dealer and i fell in love. But: no comparison with the M3 in terms of performances. Worse steering, worse feeling @ the track and, speaking with a total respect for the "torquey" N54,.... less refined and involving engine. The zed is a roadster... a baby to look at every time i can, to drive around with a permagrin, but not a sport car. The best thing would be to have both. A guy here has both (in white if I remember right his signature). Not my case .

Haha! That'll be me. I'm car crazy, sorta like M3RD. I believe he had like two other E92 M3s himself. I had a 2008 and 2011 E92 M3. The Z4 has stayed with me for 3 years now. I this little fun car. The E89 Z4 is just aesthetically beautiful inside & out, top up or down. Yeah, I do miss the M3.....just a little or when I am around friends that drive them.

Went from an '08 M3 dct to a '12 35is dct. The only regret is we live in western WA, so we only get to keep the top down for a couple of months. Car is a hoot. It's my wife's and she loves it, but will likely go back to an M3 or Pcar in two years. We usually don't keep a rig more than 3-4 years anyway. To me, it is much less mascualine than the M3, but I do love to drive it too.

I went from 2008 M3 w/ 6sp to 2011 35is. Had an E36 and E46 M3 and a Z3 M Roadster prviously. I switched mainly because I missed the roadster, and wanted a convertable again. M3 clearly an awesome car, but rarely can drive it anywhere near its capability in real world. The 35is is actually more fun because of the great N54 engine with all that torque. The quirky steering is the only negative I have, but the car really has more grip that you will need in real world driving. I did switch out the run flats which made a huge difference, and I went up to 275 rear and 235 front. As others have said, this is perhaps the best looking BMW out there right now.

I went from a '10 M3 to a real stupid downgrade (370Z) and then to the Z4 which I wish I had done instead of the 370Z. The M3 was a great car, but it was just too big of a car for just me and as much as I loved to drive the M3, I always worried about her in the parking lots and stuff like that. Even though I only have a 30i, it is a mini M3 to me. It suits me perfectly and I am glad I got to experience the M3 and realize to the fullest just what the ultimate driving machine is like to drive. I love my Z4 and unlike the 370Z, I don't have the urge to stick another $15k in mods into it just to try and make it into something it would never be.

What's your take on the cayman s, M3 and z4 on the circuit in stock form? I'm really into keeping cars stock for convenience reasons and would love to get your take on these cars.

The Cayman S is probably the faster one in terms of lap time, even with only 320 HP due to its low weight (1400 kg) and the neutral set up with the central engine. IMO it is also the easiest to drive of the 3 mentioned cars. You can go fast with a minimum of experience. Great brakes too. The M3 is the most involving one. Great engine sound, brutal gear changes (the DCT in sport plus mode is something to test: unbelieveble!). IMO, the M3 transmits more "race sensations" than the Cayman, probably due to the marked oversteer too... With a bit of imagination: exiting a mid-speed corner, the rear wheels spin a bit, the oversteer is present but not tedious, flor the gas and the V8 scares... 6-7-8k >>> change! and.... the upshift is a clear bump on yor neck...

Do not tell me I am the only Z4 owner who thought about the possibility of completely detaching the roof from this wonderful car?
Oh well, fortunately Chinese do not know what is considered "normal" and what is considered "nuts" for foreigners... |

One minor thing I wish I did prior to purchase is check on the height of the roll hoops
If i have a helmet on my head is just slightly above the plane formed by the top of the windshield and the top of the roll hoops. I'm almost certainly going to a fixed roof car in a few yrs because of this and other little things that remind me the Z4 is a (great) touring / boulevard car and (absolutely) not an all-out performance focused "ultimate driving machine". |
