Lightbulb Update On BMW Z2 Coupe, Z2 Roadster, and Future 1-series

Z2 Roadster / Z2 Coupe:

The Z2 which has been designed @ Designworks is coming along it is a unique interpretation of a BMW Roadster. And BMW Board have also approved a Coupe Z2 because of the potential of these two concepts.

*Previously provided info on Z2 - http://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254889

Future 1-series:

To understand the importance of the new 1er which will lead BMW’s response to the growth of the small premium compact that the 1er will launch with the highest amount of innovations for a new BMW it will also bring technology normally found on 5er models and upwards.

The recession taught one thing that customers are willing to downsize if their cars offer the same features.

The 1er Sporthatch will launch early next summer prior to it’s official World Premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt , September 2011 and coincide with it’s arrival in the european market.

The Sporthatch will be available as both a 3dr (F21) and 5dr (F20). The next generation 1er Coupe (F22) will launch late 2012, prior to the 1M and the significant launch of BMW’s electric car programme which is similar to the MINI E programme , in which (E82) 1er Coupe eDrive will be used for the evaluation. The 1er cabrio (F23) will arrive in mid 2013.

A year after it’s first launch in the European market BMW will launch their first serious competive hatch and resurrect the Tii badge for a Turbocharged 1er sporthatch in both 3dr and 5dr formats. Power output will be at 240PS and the cars will differ from initial M-Sport aerodynamic packets with stand alone aero packets. They will also be limited in color choice.

To signify the importance of this segment, BMW’s board have approved further designations to increase the 1er platform. The main modular structure of the 1er will also be shared with the new 3er and will allow BMW to build additional models for the 1er and 3er from the same platform. Think of the structure as meccano or lego. Firewalls and suspension mounts can be placed to suit the model whereas the ability to use front wheel drive , rear wheel drive and of course all wheel drive is made easier as is engine placement. MINI will also benefit.

This strategy will allow BMW to increase it’s profit margins for both the 1er and 3er models.

Other such ideas conceived include a 1er Gran Turismo variant which looks more like a sleek X6 shaped five door.

A Compactive Sport Tourer which is like a larger hatch come tourer.

Other Models:

Other ideas have included a Gran Coupe type four dr. A shooting Brake in both 3dr and 5dr. A Sedan has been
dismissed within the European market due to BMW’s large European fleet sales which rely on lower engined 3er Sedans and Tourings.

The FWD BMW City Car which is planned as a 3dr first , but initial design ideas have also brought a four dr sedan in the size of the E30 as well as a Roadster.

And the innovative “Y” model a combinationation of “X” meets “Z” which shows that BMW still believe in the ideas seen from the X Coupe.

And of course this time the next generation 2014 1M Coupe will not be an afterthought.

Good list, however, please do not insult the miatas by using solstice and sky with it in the same sentence.

My list is:
1) X3 (F25) or X1
2) NC Miata (I had a supercharged NB Miata before, sold it after I got the E46 M3 -> Selling the Miata was one of my biggest mistake I've made At least I learned my mistake, I won't sell the E46 M3 after I got the E92 M3 any more.)
3) The BMW Z2 as long as it is as good as (or better then) the NC miata!

Nothing new here, just a cut and paste, just nice to see a response after many, many months!

Smaller is more attractive to me, and I hope it will be substantially lighter than the Z4, too.

BMW have given the go-ahead primarily because of the reaction to the MINI Coupe and Roadster that BMW R&D decided that they need something like these two concepts for the BMW brand.

Because the Z2 will be built using BMW's lightweight philosophy , the ambitious desired ceiling for these cars is 1000KG. Primarily because originally scheduled to forgo six cylinders for four , BMW are now evaluating on specially adapted three cylinders for the car.

Because BMW are keen to establish a synergy with it's Motorrad divsion especially on Project-i , the engineers have been extensively adapting technology from Motorrad for use in a car. Reason being that some of the components are smaller and incredibly lightweight. They have built and tested a chassis using components from Motorrad and the results have been very impressive, not to mention the reduction in weight.

This synergy is extra exciting because it is one of a kind. Mercedes nor Audi have such resources unless they go and purchase a bike company. Which gives BMW an advantage in a new interpretation of a small lightweight concept sports car.

That makes sense... Just FYI, the rumor has it, the next gen Miata (ND) will also weight around 2000 lb.

I seriously doubt this will happen with all the safety requirements on today's cars. To get the MX-5 down to those levels would require use of exotic materials(think Lotus Elise) which would raise the price of the car to a point which would take it out of it's intended market. The NC was supposed to be lighter as well, but it didn't happen. I also bet the Z2(if it actually goes into production) will be far more expensive than the MX-5.

A decently-equipped Miata is currently around $28k. Two more years at 3% inflation, and you're almost at 30k. The current bloated Z4 starts at 46k. So that does leave a good chunk between the two. However, if the Z2's engine is not worthy of that big of a price difference over the Miata, I don't see how BMW can justify one. The Miata's already so well entrenched in that segment that the Z2's gonna have to be pretty competitive on price or blow the doors off the Mazda.

My preference would be a car as fun as the Miata, but with a bit more style and comfort - I'd be willing to pay a couple of grand premium for it, but not too much. It's going to be interesting to see how BMW plays it.

You got the idea right, with lighter (but not so exotic) materials, like carbon fiber. The price of carbon fiber has significantly reduced in the recent years.

...

i assume that the 1000kg goal would be for a base model. what do you think we can expect for a performance model with a 2.0ltr. turbo? 2100kg?? would a 3cyl come in at even less?? 950kg?

Still - do you really think BMW is going to put out a car which is competitive with the MX-5? Don;t see it as they are a premium line. Mazda is not and they won't drop to their level. My guess is the Z2 will be at least $35K if it is seen at all.
