Heavy clunk sound when shifting
Hi Guys,
I bought a used E89 Z4 23i manual with 24k miles. I regularly notice a soft heavy (low frequency) 'clunk' sound when changing gears from 1st to 2nd (or contrary) at low revs. I was wondering if this is just a 'feature', or something i should be looking at. Has anyone noticed this? The car drives really well and smooth, but first gear seems too short and a bit 'heavy'. Maybe it is what it is. Thanks. |

The gear ratio spacing on the Z4 6 speed is very wide particularly from 1st to 2nd and is compounded by the poor throttle response in the normal drive mode. Even experienced drivers will have a hard time making a smooth shift. Try switching to sport mode. It will change throttle response to ease shift action. If clunk persists it could be dual mass flywheel or a bad suspension bushing in the rear end.

Yes, I often don't get the shift change from 1st to 2nd right and the car starts bouncing. Glad to know it's not easy for noobs . Many thanks Vetra, I'll give it a try on sport mode. Let's see how it goes.
