steering feel and tire choice
I recently upgraded the Conti all seasons that came on my 328 X drive with a set of square Potenza RE11 (non-RFT) summer tires, and the difference in ride comfort and steering feel is just amazing!
Now, this is my first BMW, so I really can't offer any meaningful comparisons on steering feel of the F30 vs. previous 3 series, but I can say that the steering feel with the new tires is dramatically firmer and, in my hands, feels more responsive and communicative than the same car with OEM tires. If I had to draw comparisons, I'd say the steering feel in comfort mode with the new tires is pretty close to what it had been in sport/sport+ with the OEM tires, and even firmer than that in sport/sport+. The improved feel might be due in part to summer tires, or due to non-RFTs, or some combination of the two. All I know is the steering is vastly improved with the Potenza RE11 tires. I know many have commented/criticized the steering feel (or lack thereof) of the F30, but I suspect some of the complaints might be (at least partially) rectified with better tires. Just my $.02. |

My experience, so far, is the best mod for my car has been replacing the RFT with Hankook Max performance summer tires. The feel is definitely better, amongst other improvements.

I was told by my sales rep that if I put non RFT and I called BMW roadside assistance they would charge me since I was using non oem tires.

you can invest in a gel and put it in the boot. I dont know about their bmw roadside assistance since ive only had 1 flat in 120k km of running a rft car with non rft

That's good to know. BMW recently paid for a $1300 tow from the middle-of-nowhere Alaska back to BMW of Anchorage when I busted a tire and bent a rim in a gargantuan pothole. But presumably this prohibition would only apply if it was a tire related issue, right?
