E92 320d - what a blast!

Just to keep things balanced after my snowy experiences, I thought I should report on a fantastic day's driving yesterday

I went from Cardiff to Chester, and back again. Barely used a motorway all day......and had a ball!!

Used the auto in manual mode nearly all day and car was great. 370 miles, averaged 41mpg, and journey couldn't have been done any quicker unless you acted like an idiot.

Had a couple of ABS "moments" in the lanes, but all was fine - it did its job. Also had wheelspin in 4th on a couple of greasy corners, which focussed the attention

Funniest incident was using a back road to cut a corner off the route, I came round a bend to find a sign saying "slow over mats" and a car stationary. Then noticed there were some white barriers across the road......

then light dawned!!

The road was crossed by Ludlow racecourse!! So had to sit and wait for the
3 o'clock race to be completed, when the barrier sections were lifted out the way by two blokes, and we could then proceed!!!

In conclusion, if only the 320d wasn't such a good car it would make choosing a replacement a lot easier!!!!

I couldn't agree more, there are a fair few on the forum that give the 320D a bit of a bashing for not being more powerful and not having 6 cylinders. I am pleased to say that even after moving from a 6 pot BMW petrol engine to the 320D I am very happy with the car for several reasons, economy, torque and speed, car tax, insurance and nice and quiet when cruising to name a few.

Added to that when chipped I feel it is quicker than my last car.

Win Win Win..................hope the turbo doesn't blow up

That’s easy, it's called D3.

Just two things to worry about, insurance (about 50% more) and tyres (double or triple )

New D3 BT is £125, mine is £150 so nothing substantial.

Looking at the standard M Sport, there is not much difference. You lose auto aircon but get Bluetooth and 19” wheels (think 18” would have been better). It’s the suspension which makes all the difference for me but this is personal preference anyway. Oh, and a little bit of snobbism
