Defect on side mirrors?
hey guys. need your help. i just noticed this today. both my side mirrors looks sketchy. like the bottom of them are chipping or something. check out the pics. you think i can get BMW to replace these? the crap thing is that i'm at 65,000 miles and no warranty. i'm hoping that since these are side mirrors, which i think is mandatory by DOT.. that it would be like some sort of safety issue (i.e if seat belt dont work).. i dunno.. kinda bummed out that my mirrors are all jacked up now, never noticed it until today. its freaking weird. i just might get pwnd... any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I would say you pretty much have no chance that BMW will repair them post warranty. It's the same as if a bulb burned out now. It's your responsibility to keep your vehicle in compliance with DOT regulations after your warranty expires, not BMW's.

I can barely see the problem. Either just suck it up and buy the new mirrors or forget about it.

This happened in the last year or two on my '02 E46. It's like an orange-ish rust-looking discoloration, starting from the bottom edge of the glass. Over a fairly short time, it got worse, spreading further up into the glass.
My Audi bud mentioned that it was a common issue with these types of mirrors--with the heated element within. I ended up buying a replacement glass (not the whole mirror) from Tischer (about $40-50 for the E46). It was really easy to swap out. Hope this helps |

The blue (non-ZPP) glass is decently priced http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...93&hg=51&fg=10
But the auto-dimming electrochromatic glass is ridiculously expensive http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...94&hg=51&fg=10 However I checked with Tischer and they're a fair bit better than MSRP; $234 for left and $245 for right.

Seen it a lot on older cars with heated mirrors. Also seen that stuff on e46s.

40-50 bucks aint bad. i was think it would be alot more expensive. plus i dont think my mirrors are heated so.. even better..
cool.. just wasnt sure if this was a common problem or a reason for it.. no hurt in asking. thats what the forum is for... it looks alot worst in real life though, but whatevs... if i can replace it relatively cheap i'm cool with it. thanks for the help By the way... how would i know if my mirrors are heated? i just have the sport package w/nav and xenon... no premium package |
