M3 vs M4 Battery Cost

It's readily accepted that the M3 and M4 are two versions of the same car.
Does anyone know why replacement cost of the M4 battery is in the $1,900 range while the M3 battery is $650 range???

You you're quoting the right battery?

I’m pretty sure that you can run either a glass mat type lead AGM acid battery or a lithium ion battery in the car. I think this explains the discrepancy.

This. M3 and M4 use the same Li ion battery. You can see vehicle fitment lists on the page.

The cheaper battery is for the non-M cars.

Makes a li ion battery seem like a great idea huh.

Are you checking prices as a nice to know or is your battery dead?

When I sold my 2016 M3 in December 2021 it had the original battery. I had it check at a BMW dealer and they said it was at 75%.

No, my battery in the M4 is fine. They had to put a new battery in my '22 X7 and it got me to wondering what the M4 battery would cost.

Here is what led up to the battery failure:
I went out to the garage to start the X7. NOTHING!
Wouldn't start. No dash lights. No dome light. No electric of any kind.
Called roadside assist and he arrives with a flatbed. Can't get the car in neutral. Tried jumping under the hood... NOTHING. Towing guy insists he needs to jump off the battery. It's in back. Can't open the tailgate, cuz it's electric. Can't move 2nd row Captains Chairs... again... electric.
I call the dealer and service manager said to just drag it out. I asked if that would mess up the AWD and mgr says no. I found it odd that as he dragged the car out of the garage, the rear wheels were locked (in park), but the front wheels rolled...? Then the towing guy goes to close the hood, and drops the key FOB in this little opening on the side, in front of the passenger side front wheel. My heart sank as I heard it rattle for like what seemed forever into the dark abyss, between the fender and fender liner. Towing guy says, "I'll let BMW find it. Sigh... the car has less than 9,000 miles!
Turns out there was a module which was on 24/7 and it killed the battery. When they tested the battery, there was one cell completely dead. They replace the offending module, replaced the battery (but they replaced the original 105 AH battery with a 92 AH battery, as the original has been discontinued) and did a computer reprogram.

JFC.

I think there is a procedure to release the parking pawl from under the car.

Also don’t understand why jumping from under the hood won’t work. If it didn’t work in the front, it’s unlikely to have worked in the back anyway (probably related to the dead cell).

But what a terrible experience overall.

You are correct about getting out of park from underneath.
Tow guy wasn't gonna do that. I kept telling him jumping under the hood was the same. He didn't want to believe me, cuz I'm just the dumb owner. Yet he was the one who felt dumb when he hooked up under the hood to jump and he said he heard a distinct beep. I explained that is the house water heater behind him. It beeps every 30 seconds for the past 8 years. (malfunctioning air filter sensor on water heater). All in all, a frustrating day.

WTF. I would have insisted on them installing a new battery right in the garage instead of dragging it out.

They just dragged it out of the garage about 8 feet and onto a flatbed. I had previously called the BMW Service Manager, and he was the one who recommended it and said it would not hurt the vehicle. I still can't figure out why only the rear wheels dragged. The fronts rolled normally as it was pulled out. Could not get to the battery, as the tailgate could not be opened, so replacing it was not an option. In a way, I'm glad this guy did not do any more than he did.

Wouldn't start. No dash lights. No dome light. No electric of any kind.

So here is my question -
It sounds like from the above there was access to the inside of the X7. Isn't there a latch inside to release the back hatch of the vehicle? Wouldn't that in turn allow access to the battery? If access is gained via the inside or via the fob that might have allowed for jumping at the battery terminals; or removal of the bad battery and replacement with a new?

(or is the rear hatch only electrically operated from inside the vehicle or from the fob?)

It is all electric, so that also would not work. Key FOB was useless because any interface is electric, so no...

I would think M2/M3/M4 batteries would be nearly identical since they are so similar mechanically and electronically; they all use variants of the same S58.

M5/M8 are a different beast, obviously.

I would too, but apparently they're not.
