question on Jump starting others and being jump started.

Hey guys.. I have a question. Many newer generation cars are controlled by electronics, Can our e90s jump start other ppl's car or let others jump start our cars? I have heard that it could fry our electronics somehow if another car jump starts our e90.

It's safe to jump start. It won't fry your electronics, I've had to jump start my truck with my BMW a few times.

+1 I jumpstarted our minivan with the BMW.

Your "Fine Manual" has a section about jump starting the car. p 230 (2007).

Make sure you jump start from under the hood and not from the trunk where the battery is... You'll see a post under the hood that is for jump starting.

I have a better idea - use one of these

I would instead use on of these on both YOUR car and others who need it. Much less likely to throw spikes into the electronics.

Maybe so, but this is not very convenient if you have to charge or keep it charged, and then you have to also charge your battery. Nor would I want to wait to have this thing charge someone else's car. Probably much easier to keep your jumper cables handy.

I thought the BMWs were smart in shutting off lights/electronics when the battery was being drained, no?

They dont have to 'charge' someone elses bat.. just provide an assist. That usually turns cars over now days. You wait until you see a multi K$ bill for an alternator and a few other parts and you will toss them jumpercables in the trash.

I guess cars are more complicated these days. I have jumped many cars in my days and never had an issue. The reviews also didn't look too favorable.
