Downpipe + Intake Question
Just got a 2014 335i about a month ago and I'm doing some shopping for some parts but have a few questions. I'm looking at getting the VRSF Catless DP with JB4 and recently was offered to get an aFe MagnumFORCE PRO DRY Intake for a good price from a friend. I've heard good things about the intake and how it sounds but I'm wondering if I do decide to get the intake along with the DP + JB4 then how loud is the car going to be? I'm just curious to find out if it's worth getting or if it's just going to be too obnoxious. Also to add, my car is stock on performance mods, but I do have the M Performance exhaust. Thanks!

I also have a 2014 335i and just installed my JB4, VRSF DP and VRSF CP. Love the sound, way louder than stock, but not loud enough to my tasting. Be sure to upgrade your CP as well if you're doing DP. Increased boost will likely break your OEM CP.

I have a VRSF catless DP with Injen CAI and JB4. It's louder than stock but my no means obnoxious. With my CAI I can really hear the turbo, it sounds mean as hell!
+1 on the Charge Pipe, definitely do that with the JB4 increased boost!

I just had a custom exhaust installed because I wanted mine louder too. I pick the car up this afternoon, my exhaust/tuner guy said it sounds like a Lambo on steroids lol, we shall see. I had him install dual aFe Mach Force-XP mufflers, only axle back, left the resonator. He tuned the exhaust as well and told me he thinks he added 40 - 50 hp with the exhaust tune, I'm psyched!

I'd recommend first upgrading your CP over an intake at this time. Get the intake now if it's a good deal, but the first thing you should do is upgrade that CP over the intake. Especially if you're going to run map 2 off that JB4.

I appreciate the input!
I'll definitely be adding a charge pipe to my DP + JB4 order now. I'll be sure to install the CP at the same time I'll be doing the intake then. Also side question about the JB4 since I'm fairly new to all this. I've did some research on it and what is the most common map that people run on? I've heard map 5 a lot and map 2 a lot, and once I do get the DP + CP + Intake and the JB4 then what map should I be on?

No worries!
Taken from N54Tech.com: ==================== Maps: Map 0: Stock bypass. Map 1: 13psi. Suggested for most racing applications. Map 2: 14.5psi. Suggested for those with intake and other bolt on modifications with 93 RM2 or higher octane. Map 3: Progressive WMI water injection mapping with failsafe. Map 4: Stock map w/ CAN active. Allows full logging and in dash gauges on the stock mapping. Map 5: Autotuning map. Boost ranges between 12-17psi based on your cars octane, conditions, and modifications. E85 compatible. If using E85 we suggest around 30% to start. Refer to the E85 FAQ for addl info. Resets to 93 octane level adaptions when selected and adjusts itself up or down from there. Map 6: User defined map generally only used for diagnostics or troubleshooting. Map 7: Race gas map. 18.5psi peak boost on the G5 ISO. Requires straight 100-104+ RM2 octane unleaded racing fuel. Never run leaded fuel. To use this map with E85 requires the E85 back end flash, inline booster fuel pump, and a 40%+ E85 mix, per E85 FAQ. ==================== Most owners run either map 2 or 5 from what I've seen. Running mine on map 2 for now. I'd just go easy on the pedal until you replace your CP; they're known to pop. |

Looks like you're on the right track. Our cars will be similar but is yours EWG or PWG? So you have access to E85 gas?
I ran JB4 on Map 2 with DP and then when I started mixing E85 I switched to Map 5. The sound is a little louder than stock and it's most noticeable on cold starts. The DP causes a horrible smell so be prepared for that. My wife & 3 year old daughter complain about that every time I start my car in the garage and sometimes when we stop at a light with the windows rolled down. Also my stock CP broke on Map 5 but I had my aftermarket CP ready in the trunk at the time.

I got the EWG on my car, and I should have access to E85 but I'll start mixing in the future haha.
I just read your whole thread about your CP issues, and I got a little worried about my car now once everything is installed. But I'll install everything one part at a time, starting with the AA CP. Then the aFe intake, followed by JB4 and then VRSF catless DP. That way I'll be able to diagnose any issues if they do come up but hopefully none do. Regarding the smell though, that's something that I was worried about too at first but my buddy with an e90 has the VRSF catless DP on his car and it's barely noticeable. Maybe it's different on the F30s but I'll see once I get it.

I have a ceramic coated VRSF catless down pipe and the smell is quite noticeable. When considering the gains though its worth it. No worse than any of the other vehicles on the road though (especially trucks) that are older, beat up, have exhaust leaks and worn out sensors. They spew out worse exhaust fumes and odors than our cars ever will.

I never smelled it on my previous E92 but I smelled it on other cars but the E92 had secondary cats which helped eliminate a lot of smell.
If you are worried about smell at all, consider a catted downpipe option, especially a higher quality option like Fabspeed. |

Update to my thread.
I've just installed the JB4 on Monday and played around with it a bit. Glad to say installation went smooth and everything is working properly with it. Had my CP and DP installed this morning and wow the car does not only feel like a beast, but it sounds like one too! So far no problems, and I hope none come up lol. I'm holding off on the intake for now, but so far I'm satisfied

Congrats! Enjoy the new beast you've unleashed in your car. If you have it available experiment with some E85. I was sceptical at first, but I think I might be sold. Low to mid range torque is definitely noticeable once you find a good source and find out what mixture works best with your car.
