M Sport steering wheel and paddle shift extensions installed!!!!

wanted to upgrade my stock 35i steering wheel with push-pull shifters to the current pull-pull type, but the cost to do so seemed a little high.

got lucky and found a practically new M Sport wheel with pull-pull shifters installed! together it was the same price as just the shifters alone. gotta love ebay!

i found, for my hands, the shifters were a little low to reach, so i figured i would try out the paddle shift extensions they sell on ebay. i bought the F30 stick on ones and they work great!

Nice upgrade!

If a part fell in my lap I would probably do the upgrade, but I feel like I am a bit indifferent on the paddle functions. I kinda like being able to do either function with whatever paddle I can reach. On the other hand, if it has been a while since I used the paddles, I have to concentrate on which direction I am supposed to go.

Well done on the swap!

i have to admit, the convenience of both paddles being able to up and down shift was a nice feature especially in long sweeping 360 degree highway off ramps. i have driven friends cars with the traditional pull-pull paddles and was really sold on the "F1" style format, which is why i went this route.

I'm keeping my old wheel, so i could swap paddles if needed. i used my paddles 90% of the time, so it will be interesting how i feel about these in the next few months! i am enjoying them now!

as for the paddle extensions, they do have the same 3m double back tape used on gopro mounts. i have pulled on these extensions pretty hard and they don't budge. we'll see how it holds over time.

the thickness of the paddles surprised me, they are quite heavy and stout. if the tape doesn't hold, i already have plans to drill and countersink the holes to mechanical attach them to the paddle.

i will take pics and post if that happens.

is it possible to replace the stock paddles at all? or extensions are the only option?

How do you like the M-Sport steering wheel compared to the stock wheel? What is the difference? Do you have a pic of the original steering wheel?

The most notable difference that I can state about the M steering wheel compared to he stock wheel are as follows:

1. Thicker diameter (7mm from what I have read)
2. Softer padding on the wheel
3. Softer and higher quality leather wrap.

I only expected the thicker wheel from my initial research which was already appealing enough. After receiving the wheel, I immediately noticed the much higher quality leather and softer padding. Otherwise everything else seams to be equal. The airbag clicked into place perfectly and changing the wheel was a breeze. The pull-pull paddles are great and functioned exactly as expected. I prefer them much more and the push-pull design of the stock one. Hopefully the pics show the differences that I have stated (other than the softer padding!)

That looks great, I can really tell the difference now. Might have to get me one of those (they fit E90s too from what I hear). Thanks!
