I was looking into a good MPG tune previously.

Is the main idea just going for a lean tune that meets the safety criteria?

Long highway cruise... lean it out as much as possible?

******** ?

Are we really talking mileage expectations in these cars? Sounds like the European guys with their diesels...

I'm lucky to get 16. Drive it like you stole it...

I'm never the type to care about such things, but I did take a 3,000 mile road trip in mine and the mpg did cross my mind!

But... when you do the math at just 2 mpg difference it is hardly worth the energy to have thought about it at all.

What's the "deep south" have to do with anything? Tupelo is far from the deep south, we have the highest fuel prices in the entire state around here.

I'm paying $3.50 a gallon for 93 ethanol free, not too far off as long as I am local, but I am always in a large city so I am paying those premiums also.

I drive my X5 50i and the Z4 35is very spirited, I am lucky to get 12mpg in the Z4 and I get about 15mpg out of the X5, I went through the factory set of tires ($1500) on the X5 in 20k miles.

Trust me, I put my money where my mouth is. I am able and willing to drive 2 high-performance BMW's without complaining about the true cost of ownership.

Again, if you can't afford it then don't buy it. You know what your local costs are before you buy and a little research will show what annual costs are.

I agree, blows my mind people will own a $73k auto and complain about fuel costs.

My wife averages 23 in our GS350 so it's fun to beat her in my hi powered sports car. I wish the Z was as reliable but I'll be dammed if I'm going to do my 90 miles per day in a Prius.

Yes, I'll play with the tune for economy but also also work on the Turbo lag and a little more peek power. In time, for now I'm still researching. I spent too much time on the ZF tuning so I need to back off for a while.

But back to the OP, I like the color. I almost bought something similar but it was not to be.

This car is capable of 32-36mpg on the highway. That's close enough for me to that magic 40mpg the hybrids are getting, and we get to do it in style!

At 40 mph? Really, I get like 22-23 on the highway on 1k-1500 mile trips, 70-80 mph with cruise on (I-10 TX to FL - nice and flat too).

36mph in the 4 cyl would still be impressive...

I'm not going to argue the other points you make here, but you destroy much of your credibility with ridiculous comments like this!

Impossible. Unless, of course, you're referring to the puny 16i (or 18i) version that's offered in the UK. I barely get 20 mph on the highway on cruise control (best scenario).

Not impossible, I'm running around at 26-27 mixed driving but mostly hi way.

Tire pressures and driving habits. Are you modded or running a tune?

No mods, Driving habits is the best way to get high numbers on this car, however, most of the roads around here are flat and I only use ethanol free fuel. 10-15%+ blends destroy the fuel economy of these engines.

Cruse is the worse scenario. Cruse is meant for convenience, not economy.

power difference. dont miss it.

Had A stage 2 Dinan on my 35is. Yes It was quick. And The Sound was awesome. But just had stage 1 Dinan installed on this 28i. It gets up and goes. Fast enough for me. Handles better. And yes better gas milage (though i dont care). The best part is the car is more fun. No burnouts with that DCT. I can smoke the tires at a light. Launch control sucks! As far as color. Valencia orange is awsome. Poster car for car show in 2014.

35is is a waste

10k for 19 inch rims. Thats what you get. 35is and 35i 2014 and up both have oil coolers. Dinan stage 2 both get you 410 HP. If i knew that before i would have leased a 35i instead. Bottom line the Z4 looks awesome but it is to heavy and handles like crap. But who is really racing anyway. Love the hardtop. Just a summer toy for me.

Interesting discussion here. So, I too, was a little curious about going with less power, but then you did explain it above.

Here is my story, I had a yellow 2011 3.0i for 4.5 years until I sold it about 8 months ago. Pulled the car from a dealer’s showroom and bought it without knowing much about Z4 prior. I just felt in love with the car when I first saw it, the look, the color, the interior, low mileage……. plus, the dealer offered me a price I couldn’t resist, 9 grands off original asking. It was a slow day for them. While owning the car, I learned more and more about the car. I had been happy and enjoying the car until one occasion, I test drove a 35is at a different dealership, I just realized how much more fun I could have had in the 35is with the additional ponies. So after the test drive, I had been on a mission to search a yellow 35is across the country for 2 years, and finally found my car now 8 months ago. Actually power was not the only reason I was willing to fork out an additional $15K(counting the sale tax) for the upgrade. Other differences between the 2 trims have been discussed on the forum. For me, it was a few cosmetics differences in additional to the power increase, the bigger 19” M rims, the Symmetrical exhaust tips(couldn't live with twin exhaust tips on only one side of the bumper, just me) and the different rear bumper..……

You have to pay to play guys. If you can't afford the total ownership of a vehicle, why did you purchase it?
While I get your point, try ponying up $4/gal of premium like we do in Calif before passing too harsh a judgement on those who live in places other than the deep south!
Ha! I just filled her up today for 1,65 euro's a liter of 95 (thus not the premium 98...). That equals 7.10 dollars a gallon....
I understand that these cars are not bought for their great mpg's, but I do not see the harm in having or taking into account higher mpg's when choosing an engine. It saves money, is less polution, saves time at the gas station....

Back to the OP's car: rad wheels and colour. Tablet instal looks quite neat as well. Not sure about the M badge....I'm a purist. But that colour is grear; only seen it once in real life. I'm most definately on the "colour this world up" camp and the Z4 is a fun car, thus can easily be had in a fun colour. Just like Wranglers. Nothing wrong with a bright skittle on your driveway

One option I've never seen is the contrasting colored top that was offered by BMW on the Z4. When my wife and I were shopping for a used Z4 to be her DD in 2014, the lack of available colors in the CPO and private party used E89 market was appalling. She ended up buying a boring 2013 Space Gray 35i on which the only saving grace is its Coral Red interior. After we bought it, I suggested she have the top painted either metallic or non-metallic black as shown in a BMW sales brochure, but she declined. If the decision had been mine, I would have done it in a hot second if only to make the car stand out a little from all the other Space Gray BMWs on the road for very little money.

Caliper covers in Valencia Orange might be a nice touch.
