My buddy, Debs and her lovely mother, have changed my vocabulary and vernacular quite a bit over the years. I've picked up "proper," "bits," garage being pronounced "gair-edge," "sorted out," etc. I've also been educated on chips versus crips and have learned quite a bit of cockney slang.

Her lovely mother, who is about 4' tall, is the quietest and sweetest thing I've ever met. At the same time, I'd rather fight Mike Tyson than to cross her. She grew up around the Kray's. An absolute angel who would tear someone to shreds twice her size if challenged. She just has that "have a cuppa and biscuit, but if you f up, I'll rip your heart out through your kneecaps" vibe.
Ha. No, wife is South African, but nearly all the phrases in your first paragraph trend there as well.

In South Africa, french fries are 'chips' and potato chips are also 'chips'. Drives me batty. Was confusing as hell until I realized that nothing comes with potato chips as a side there, so the only time 'chips' meant lays potato chips was in the context of a snack.

Another blessing you have bestowed on your wife, getting her out of such a country.

To further confuse the matter, I always thought that "fish and chips", as in the very popular dish served in England, was fried fish and French fries.

I'm Australian and the fanny thing always cracks me up. On a related note, hearing north americans say 'erbs is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Yup - tease my wife with this all the time. She calls them Ha-erbs. I'm like "girl, we aren't talking the nick name for a guy named Herbert, we're talking about spices here. Jeez.

She also drops her "R" if a word ends in it. Example:

Alligator.

USA Pronunciation: Alli-gade-errr
South African Pronunciation: Alli-gate-ah

The problem this causes, is when she pronounces some town in South Africa and I automatically add an R to the end and then can't find it on a map. Couple of years ago, we were headed to a resort town - and she told me it was called "Nice-nah". So, I'm thinking - okay the actual name of this town is Nizner. Looked everywhere, couldn't find this damn place.

Yeah...

Had a band director in HS that was from Boston and had the same R issue. We used to tell him that he didn't use Rs in "pock" (park) and "yod" (yard) so he could save them for "Cubar" (Cuba) and "tomater" (tomato)

I think they're fries, or fried potatoes, but not thin like Merican chips.

Then again,
chips=crisps,
crisps=Merican chips.

Therefore, fish and chips should mean fish and Merican chips, not fries.

WTF, England?

i get bored too. If i'm REALLY bored, i'll continue looking until my head swivels a lot to creep them out. If traffic permits.

It's so unconscious that I'm trying to consciously STOP doing it, but I always <sniff> when they look my way.

In Boston English, "ah" (the one without an R after it) often becomes something closer to "aw", so that, for example, "tonic" comes out more like "tawnic"

Also, Bostonians, like Nooyawkas "New Yorkers" often leave out consonants in their rush to get words out, in particular, d's and t's at the end of words. So "so don't I" is more properly pronounced "So doan I," real-estate brokers babble on about houses with "plenny a chahm" and we get such phrases as onna-conna.

Off topic sorry:
my family speaks only Greek @ home but all have NY/New England english accents, visiting Florida we see and hear people just like us with our weird speech St. Augustine, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale

If your wondering, people from Boston don't like actors from Boston speaking in a Boston Accent "Departed" "Black Mass" and "The Town" ears still bleeding
