What makes them “snob cars” exactly? If anything, Porsche has done more to please their enthusiast customers than any other brand and it’s not particularly close.
I’ve driven all the ones listed in the comparison I made plus the Taycan. For example, the cayman / boxster is a one trick pony, it’s impractical: no back seat, it drones on long cruises, over priced, suffers from bore scoring maybe even on the new models: time will tell, and they are hard to work on. Better steering feel over the M2, sure but the M2 has it beat in most other categories

It's funny that Porsche (and VW) continues to see their stock slide while they carry on with limiting GT allocations and allowing dealers to continue with the markups shenanigans.

when was the last time you drove one? you are talking about the old pre 2009 ..Porsche had bore scoring issues 1997-2008

the 981 and 718 have zero issues and don't drone on long cruises.
I've have owned both 981 and 718 and have been flawless and are a bargain compared to the bigger heavier big brother 911 these days

droning is usually an issue with aftermarket exhaust and can happen on any car with one.

I wouldn’t put the bore scoring past them until they rack up high miles. They are all due for a price correction, it’s only a matter of time

Bore scoring happened on M96 engine(97-08). 9A1 blocks switched to Alusil. 9A1 bore scoring is practically non existent. A handful cases, but not anywhere near M96. M96 also had oil starvation issues, that too was solved on 9A1 with baffling and variable oil pump. N55 and S55 in M2 are definitely not without their own faults.

WHoooooooooooooooooooooooa i wouldn't call (A1 bore scoring non existant. It DOES happen and I say that as an owner of one. I stood there and saw/heard a 991.1 at my local Indy with this crazy slapping sound, he said bore scoring.

Crazy, I think it might have something to do with the stroke length which puts more load on the side walls. Imagine paying north of $100k for a car where the engine may self destruct. At least with M rod bearings a couple thousand and you have peace of mind

Yeah it's far more likely on the larger capacity engines so the smaller one used in the Boxster SHOULD be ok but 100% do a bore scope. It's about $400 and could save you..... $30K.

My E92 M3 had rod bearings done and still blew the engine anyway. Two blown engines in 60k miles. One under warranty one not. Fun times!

Main bearings then? S65 don't seem to fail very much other than bearings.

This is what turned me off of a 996 or similar year Cayman and 997.1. Sure, BMW has some bearing issues, but those can be monitored and addressed for a reasonable cost (relative to the price of the car). But bore scoring? By the time you figure out you have it, its usually too late and the ONLY way to fix it is an entire engine rebuild. No thanks. Even when you could get a really nice 996 for under 30k, I was not interested in having $20K in reserve at all times for a rebuild.

My budget was super tight and never considered a 997.1. I waited for a .2 with a small front end claim to bring the price down rather than roll the dice on the .1

not surprised it sold. its like a 1/1200 car or something. you can't modify a turbo or carrera to be one of these. turbo has no manual. carrera doesn't get the widebody. its a collector piece like a 911R.

that being said you can get like 90% of the way there with a manual carrera GTS with buckets. and spend 1/4 of the money.
