Dinan Software for E89 s35i: yes ... later

Talked to 'Scott' in technical section at Dinan about Dinan plans for tuning software for the N54 engine in the E89. Answer is yes, will develop and test at a later date, when a). projects currently in the pipeline are finished, and b). they get their hands on an E89.

Issue of concern is ability of DCT to handle the torque a Dinan tune provides (~420 lb-ft in an E9X 335i). Scott says they will test and measure to ensure whatever they finally offer won't break the drivetrain ... and they will warranty the product as they do now.

I've got 20K miles on an E93 335i with Dinan Stage II. It's fantastic. Zero engine problems/codes, smooth as silk, and incredible power/torque. This is something to look forward to in the E89 with the N54 mill.

Z4 M6 should handle about anything thrown at it. DCT: not so sure. Recall that the M3 DCT on which modeled only has to deal with 295 lb-ft stock out-of-the-box. BTW, that's what Dinan is working on right now, a tuning package for the M3.

I want to know if something simple like an SSTT or JB+ will work on the 35i!

Of course not. The Z4 DCT is balanced to the torque rating of the N54 engine and the characteristics of the rest of the drivetrain. The issue of max torque rating arises only if that engine is tuned to deliver significantly more output than rated, something several tuners have found fairly easy to do working on the software side alone.

It's a bit silly to use the Veyron as a benchmark - in a somewhat different competitive category from the Z4, eh? Get a grip.

There's no reason it wouldn't. What I can see BMW doing is putting the TMAP sensor in some rediculous place that's very difficult to get to.

There's no issue tuning the software in the N54 engine. Both chips and direct software changes will work. Only issue is the one I raised in original post - can the E89's DCT handle the torque of a well-tuned N54.

What is the current status of what maximum torque the DCT of the Z4 can handle ?

Does anyone know the make and model of the DCT in the Z4 ?

Found this on wikipedia :

Getrag has developed a complete range of DCT [16] transaxles, including 7DCL750, a seven-speed transaxle for mid-engine longitudinal applications, capable of taking more than 750 N·m (553 ft·lbf). [17] Getrag will be providing its DCT in its first commercial applications, for the Dodge Journey and Volvo S40 and V50, from mid-2008. [18] Getrag has the 6DCT250 dry DCT under development, for use in front wheel drive transverse applications, and uses electro-mechanical actuation, rather than electro-hydraulic. [19]

In the 2nd quarter of 2008, Getrag had signed an agreement with Chrysler to supply its PowerShift DTCs for use in American markets. [4] However, due to the global economic downturn, this was subsequently cancelled. [4] [20] [21]

Getrag is also working with Bosch to develop a DCT for use in hybrid vehicles. [4] [22] [23]

Getrag dual clutch transmissions are used in the BMW M3, [24] BMW Z4 Sdrive35i, [25] Ferrari California, [26] Ferrari 458 Italia, [27] Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG [28] and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and Renault vehicles. [29]

Does this mean that the Z4 DCT can handle at least 750Nm ??

this gives not a lot to play with on my 35is (tuning that is) given that in overboost it already produces 500Nm and I don't want it to go to the limits of the tranny ....

Question though...

Gents,

Please clarify.. I thought that the DCT actually was rated HIGHER than the 6mt.. Is that not correct?

This came up in another post comparing the two and why the 35is does not come with a Manual Trans option.

I am trying to narrow this down as to one day go with the JB3 or wait for the Dinan stage 2 (with a warranty.)

As for now, the 35i with a 6MT is awesome, but I want to make it last as well..

Please chime in if anyone has knowledge or experience.

Thanx..

The 35is gets the same DCT the M3 uses.

Performance options for your Z4 35i

Hello guys,

The BMS JB3 Processor is available for your Z4 35i right now. It's undetectable by the dealership when uninstalled and the JB3 currently holds the record for the most power out of a N54 engine with just tuning.

For half the price of the Dinan flash, why not get something that grows with your modifications as well?

80+ whp and 80+ wtq increase on pump gas! For the money, I don't think there's a better performing product on the market.

When you chip sellers are ready to match Dinan's warranty, you'll have a more attractive product.

Well, the JB3 processor can be removed from your car within 15 minutes. The processor is a piggy back unit and doesn't leave a trace or block out the ECU like some other flashes on the market does.

Our CEO, myself, and a coworker are all running this setup. We have all taken our cars for service on numerous occasions for various reasons. I have never had an issue with this kit. No ECU lockouts, no hassle, and the full use of the stock ECU for all throttle mapping for stock-like driveability. Hmmmm.......

But you're more than welcome to pay for the Dinan flash at $1699.00 which yields you 60 hp (opposed to 80+ whp) and 74 lb/ft torque (opposed to 80+ wtq). I just thought I would post information for guys wanting save some money on their performance upgrades and yield more power.

Dinan's warranty is through Dinan at approved BMW centers. The warranty is separate from BMW's actual powertrain warranty.
