having the second thought about the color
ordered z4 one week ago. production # not given as of today.
can i change the color? i ordered mine in space gray but i noticed that there are not that many pics of z4 on space gray. i don't think space gray is a popular color for z4. but then i saw many pics of z4 in black and i think i'm falling for it - it looks so awesome. space gray vs. black - what do you guys think? also, im aware that there are two blacks - regular and metalic. i read some past postings and it looks like regular black is preferable...correct? my car months away and i still cannot make up my mind! help |

Over the 2 colors you mention I would personally prefer the black. But no matter what you know best. Any chance you could see them in person over the dealerships in your area? That should give you the verdict. You probably have some time before your order is finalized and scheduled but you better do it quickly. Last I would say that the metalic colors are more durable and swirl resistant. What's your interior color choice?

Stick with the Space Grey... It's beautiful on this car!
(visions of James Bond in his "Silver Birch" DB5) I've received many compliments on the color and while I never really worried much about "popularity"... there is at least one other SG Z4 in my neck of the woods & I must admit, when seeing it, I thought "WOW... that looks good!" Whichever you choose... you'll be happy... but your first instinct is usually the best.

If you get black, go with the Sapphire Black because it is a 2 stage paint (base + clear); thus, it is more durable and easier to take marks/swirls/imperfections out of it. All BMW non-metallic paints are single stage paint.

Here is the difference between Black Sapphire, my car and a Gloss Black that I have seen. Space Gray is also nice, had it on a 550i. I've seen it in person on the Z4 but don't have any good pics.
EDIT: My memory may be playing tricks on me. I surely recall the 30i launch Z4 (second pic) was gloss Black but the picture has the sparkle of Black Sapphire. Bottom line, I don't know which it is.

I love my Space grey. Wouldn't change it. Love how the light reflects off the paint in the evening at dusk. Also at night it just looks really aggressive.

Are you sure about that? I thought single stage paint was no longer--used several decades ago. All modern paint finishes, solid or metallic, include base color w/clear. No?

I have a Saphire Black X3. It looks great when clean but shows dirt and dust very quickly and any fine lines that appear over time will be more noticeable as well. I am planning on a Space Grey one myself. Get what you want and don't worry about what others have. In fact, having fewer of my color in the region around me is something I would see as a plus.

I had the Alpine White for my 2008 and the Orion Silver for my 2009, loved both colours. It is a matter of taste you should get what you like.

That's a funny way to choose, depending on what is popular. I usually go the opposite way (besides deciding what color I like the most) and would lean towards the less popular ones to stand out more.
I guess it also depends on your interior color. I would prefer space grey over black, personally. |

Personally I've always loved the BMW blue colors. I think my next car might have something from the BMW individual line like monaco blue or midnight blue. |

My AW Z4 is much easier to keep clean than my BS 335d. That said, there is nothing like a sparkling clean and shiny black car. If you enjoy washing, waxing and detailing your car or paying someone to do it, get black. If you do not or will not, get a color that is easier to keep clean, like SG or TS.

Black is beautiful - but also a pain to keep clean - get a light color and you will enjoy the car more and not be a slave to keep it clean constantly- as is said - black is beautiful, until it gets dirty -

Space Grey. I was thinking about Sapphire Black before I ordered my car, but it was too black. It would be different if Carbon Black was available.

I am relying on what the dealer told me about the BMW paints when my first e89 had to be repainted after damage in shipment. All non-metallic is single stage and the manager of the BMW Certified Body Shop then confirmed it.

You're welcome for the pics, you won't regret the choice. My lawn is a lot easier to keep looking good than a black Zed!! |
