Thank you. Right now not much on news about charities yet, other than the Red Cross, but I'll post up once we start to hear (assuming we have connectivity of some kind).

Listening to an interview with the Director of Palm Beach Animal Control who says they are getting lots of calls about people evacuating and leaving their dogs chained up outside. WTF is wrong with people? Can they not picture what's going to happen to those dogs? There are shelters and hotels that accept pets. It's not legal to leave your dog alone and chained up outside in normal weather here.
I know one of those cock suckers this old POS I work with left 2 days ago to go on vacation to London. He keeps his dogs outside no matter the weather. I overheard him saying someone will be stopping by to check on them for him
He's a fucking POS!!

I've called animal control on him before about him keeping his dogs outside in 90*+ weather. West Palm Beach Animal Control gives no fucks. There is no law against leaving them outside; that is what I was told by animal control.
Unbelievable:

I called animal control and reported his address, and that there are 3 dogs outside in his backyard. Hopefully they also pursue prosecuting him.

Legally, that is cruelty to animals. A third degree felony in Florida.

Just a gloomy gray day. Rains a little every so often. A little windy but not really much. Was expecting tropical storm wind by 4 today but hasn't happened yet. Bigger winds supposed to be tomorrow, escalating throughout the day to maybe 80 mph in the evening. Unless there is a dramatic change, we aren't expecting much impact where we are now and actually have hope to not lose power.

Despite this, Palm Beach County has a curfew in place until further notice.

Same for me. As for the curfew, let me shed some light on that. The idea behind the curfew is to keep people indoors. It makes it easier for law enforcement to keep crime down in an area as large as ours. I suspect that is why they have not eliminated the curfew.

Your news outlets need to start using the metric system. Every damn time i read about the storm surge, i get a delayed response for the will to scream because my tiny European brain needs time to calculate how much 12 feet is. Also the storm it self is tiny, 400 miles is like 72 horsefarts, and winds of 130 miles per hour sounds like a nice little breeze.

I've calculated these all multiple times, and every time it's a chock how much the measuring system messes up the understanding of the situation.

Yeah I get that. Unfortunately, IMO every aspect of preparing for this storm understandably jumped the gun a bit based on early forecasts and whatever effect we have probably won't wind down until sometime Monday. Curfew from Saturday afternoon to sometime Monday for what may ultimately be a tropical storm or barely Cat 1 for most of the county doesn't seem rational to me at the moment. But maybe it's needed when schools shut down Thursday / Friday, which led to businesses needing to do the same so no one is watching the store. I don't recall anything so far in advance of the storm for Frances, Jeanne or Wilma, but maybe my memory is fading. I also don't think Miami-Dade has anything like this county-wide but maybe that changed since this morning. Anyway, I'd rather have a curfew and miss the storm so it'll be fine.

Then no one here would understand! They spoke about the U.S. switching to the metric system when I was in grade school in the late 1970's. I wonder if they still talk about it.

Forecast modeling has jumped orders of magnitude since then. With computing power and data stored from previous mistakes of modeling....the accuracy has improved tremendously......but...it will never be perfect. The atmosphere is too dynamic to account for every perturbation.

Irma is a very dangerous hurricane. Might go down as #1 since record keeping started on tropical systems.

You are correct. We all must realize that Hurricane Harvey is playing a huge part in the "overreaction" that we are seeing to Irma. However, it is better that everyone overreacted than ignored this storm. What if Irma direct hit Broward as a Cat 4 and everyone was asleep at the wheel? THAT would have been bad.

I don't disagree but I have lived here long enough to realize the are only so many times this can occur. If a storm comes again next year, a few less people will heed warnings. Eventually a major storm will hit and I hope we don't wear out people's attention such that many don't listen when it does. Personally, I prepare every time, but my risk is mitigated by living inland and my preparation was greatly reduced by getting impact resistant glass this year (great timing by me). Putting steel shutter up sucks.

But I get it. This is a massive storm. Harvey just happened. Better safe than sorry this time.

Just hit Georgia so now I'm not relevant to the hurricane story anymore but I want to say that gas has been easy to find in north Florida/Georgia and everyone I run into walking tbone, getting gas etc... says "be safe" "good luck" etc... Ok, not everyone, but there is pretty much an understanding that we are all looking to get out safe and everyone has been courteous. Keep it up America!!!

Edit: State police, utilities vehicles, ambulances, gigantic emergency hauling trailers, just an overall showing of emergency specialists lined up every few miles on I-75. It's amazing that they are away from their families ready and willing to help others.

Can anyone explain why this hurricane is supposed to take an abrupt northward direction? To me it looks like it's just going to keep heading west.
