When mine broke I found you had to buy the whole bar so I simply drilled ans screwed mine back together. Did both sides while I was at it.

When mine did this I just superglued the thing back together. It's been holding great for a couple of years now.

Brackets

I ended up casting my own out of Aluminum and then painting them.
Drilled them out and bolted them together with a few #10 bolts with nylock nuts.
I don't think they will break ever again.

Would you take orders for these?

Thanks Ivor. This is a great tip, and I've just done the exact same to my own Z4 and it works a treat. Very clean result!

But now there's a small net in the back. Is that something new, or was just missing from my car when I bought it (used)?
I am wondering about this too, my 2009 model does not have the net yet the other day I saw a 2012 model which has this net attached to the divider. I tried to see if I can find it on realoem but when I put my VIN it does not show any nets, so I assume this only came on later cars? does anyone know?

AFAIK the net was added as of spring 2012.

For you guys in the states,
you can try to order it from Treatstock.com
Maybe there is a cheaper option to get it printed directly in the states?

Or print them yourself...

I created an alternative hinge design which looks very close to stock.

If you would like to just purchase the hinges, they are available on Treatstock (internationally):
https://www.treatstock.com/3d-printa...rtition-hinges

If you would like to purchase the 3D model and print the hinges yourself (or have them made from metal/other materials), it is available on Cults3D:

Very nice piece! For what it's worth my original Superglue fix is still holding since I did it about 5 years ago.

The reason they only supply the complete assembly by the way, is probably because the brackets are plastic-welded on.

This is what I used:

4.5mm drill bit
Countersink drill bit
Countersunk M4 Allen bolts (25mm long, stainless steel)
M4 nut (Nyloc in the photo but any nut will do)

Drill carefully through the plastic pillars from the inside of the bracket, all the way through the outside on both halves.

Countersink the top bracket holes on the outside so that the bolts sit flush:

Assemble the two halves of the bracket together and tighten up the nuts on the bolts (not too tight). Make sure the brackets are properly aligned.

Now on the bottom of the bracket, use a Hot Glue Gun to fill the space around the nut with glue. Don't get any glue on the thread as you need to remove the bolt once the glue has set. The glue will now hold the nuts in place in the perfect position for the bolt to be inserted. This makes assembling the bracket onto the bar in the boot (trunk) much easier and also prevents the nut from loosening.

Job done and it looks pretty neat. I actually replaced my stainless steel bolts with some black ones I bought from Amazon and the repair looks like it was original equipment, plus it's considerably stronger than the plastic weld that was there before. These are the bolts I used:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hope this helps.
Really good guide and served me well with my repair, didn't bother with the glue gun bit but did up fine - Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Mark

Thanks to this post I managed a similar fix with a few M4 bolts and a bit of Loctite. This part broke for me as I was looking at the car to purchase. I didn't realize it at the time but even though I could put the cargo cover in place it didn't hold proper position and the top was very erratic in operating.... sometimes it just refused, red light blinking and the trunk wouldn't open. I had to fish for the trunk pull several times. Almost thought I had bought a real problem case, then I made the connection to this part and did the fix last night. The cover now drops into place and latches solidly and the top and trunk are working fine. I appreciate what BMW is trying to do here, but my god it's a bit overkill on the sensors.

I didn't notice that anyone else was having top operating issues though in their descriptions, or perhaps that was just a given?

Regardless, thanks for the info here, even if it is an old thread.

3D printed fix

Hello folks.

I recently bought a 2013, and the PO had "fixed" the broken bracket with three zip ties. Those have all died now, and the right side is loose.

I specifically did not want to recreate an overdesigned failure. Only create a simple solution that does a good job replicating the aesthetic of the original. So about 20 minutes in Tinkercad and bada boom, bada bing.

Designed to work with Zip Ties or bolts/washers.

If using zip ties, I'd suggest a cross pattern approach.

When my installation is complete, I'll post pictures and a link to the free download on Tinkercad.

Clamp it, Jed!

Second time was the charm. I added an alignment notch to the far side for ease of assembly. Holes are 5mm.

And the link I promised:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6542849

I'm very pleased with the function and aesthetic. Fun little design project.

This is the test fitting. I'll have the bolts painted black before final assembly.

Renfield,

I know nothing about 3d printing but just found a site that will print that file for a charge.

It works out twice as much as just buying the ones in the earlier link!

Has anyone managed to order these?

I tried yesterday but just ended up 'waiting for a quote'. I didn't hear anything so I have just filled in the form again and see if the actually do sell these things.

Requires some patience...

What about Rob's solution?
https://e89.zpost.com/forums/showpos...7&postcount=32
U could purchase the file and get it printed by a 3D print service provider.

By the way, I've printed mine with transparent ABS and integrated a bigger LED that got connected to the trunk light:
