Right. I'm going to wash the car myself. In February. In New Hampshire. There's simply no sane or safe way to do this. Assuming I could even get an outside faucet to work, the water would freeze in the hose and onto the car. Buckets aren't an adequate way to rinse, even with a car this small. Hand-washing a car in the winter is a great way to get a serious thermal injury. It's also a great way to turn the driveway into an ice rink. Why wash the car in the winter? 'Cause it gets dirty, duh. There's no reason to leave road grime and salt on the car. Why not leave it covered in the barn through the winter? It's my only car, and it's a hoot to drive all year. The real shame would be to have a car like this and not to drive it. In the winter, I usually use a wand-style wash (the nearest one of which is 24 miles away). Occasionally, I'll drive through a "touchless" wash (the nearest of which is 30 miles away) to get the worst grime and salt off. Sure, in the summer I'll enjoy playing with the clay, Zaino products and my fancy microfiber cloths. However, that roof leak looks as if it would be a problem even in a rain, let alone while washing the car. As the OP said, this is about a leak. From the photos, I can't see why anyone should suspect the same leak wouldn't happen with a bucket rinsing the car with the finest imported Spa water from Belgium.

I'm a tad bit worried about my roof leaking now! Damn it!
Also you shouldn't be insulting the dude for such a tamed comment. I'm sure no harm was meant and most of us can afford a 'wash' if we could buy these cars. I know your frustrated with what happened but you shouldn't go off on fellow members like that |

I've run my car through a touchless automated car wash once and while a few tiny drops seeped in from under the rear glass, the car was otherwise sealed and tight.

You took a shiny brand new sports car to the car wash and you posted about it on the Z4 "Enthusiasts" forum and now you are surprised someone (happen to be me 1st) said it's a shame??!! Automatic car washes do a sh^&ty job and they scratch the finish more than if done by hand. There's 2 good reasons. Not scratches anyone can see by glancing at the car at this point, but wait until you wax it under the lights and you'll see all of them. That is, if you wax it yourself. Taking a sports car through an automated car wash is going to make some folks cringe when they hear about it, sorry. I'm not telling you what to do, just reacting. Chances are that specific carwash sprayed water at a very high pressure (more so than you can ever get from washing at home) right over the top of the car between the 2 panels. i take my cars to a wash, but they hand wash it
won't let it go through the tunnel thing and no i will never wash the car myself I rather pay $15-20 then spend 1-2 hours washing it (plus cost of water and materials) Nonetheless, where i live, the HOA doesn't even allow you to wash cars. Hell even the State will give you a ticket if your neighbors report it So no choice even if i wanted to wash it myself

Wow, that is quite a torrent. I would have freaked out if it was me.
Rather then depending on a perfect seal, the top likely has a simple drain system designed into it. I bet some aspect of the carwash overwhelmed the drain, and it overflowed. Either that, or something got plugged up. Either way, that shouldn't happen. I got caught in a heavy downpour a few weeks back, and the interior stayed bone dry, as I would expect it to. |

That's a lot of water. Either the seals are busted, or the roof is out of alignment.
