Can't access youtube from here but I saw the BMW plant manager or VP on TV the other day and he said it was taken from the colours and design of the flag of Bavaria. (not the airplane prop as they used to say)
It was a show called Utimate Factories and it was all about building Z4's Pretty cool, even if it was the old Zeds.
