You would absolutely hate the rest of the subcompact luxury segment as Car & Driver rates it the best of it's segment for five years in a row. I know it doesn't fit the narrative of some here to bash BMW for nearly everything but the X1 is a pretty good entry level offering.

Well that ship has sailed.. all models have some sort of m variant.. I'd take an X1 M over an X3 M any day. Do I wish they kept the M out of SUV's yes, but they have to keep up with competition.

Who wouldn't want a lower, smaller X3M?

If it were RWD like the first-gen X1 then I'd be ok with it.

But FWD is just so blasphemous given the history of the M division.

One thing I've learned in today's world is to expect the unexpected. Nothing is sacred anymore.

Yeah, I agree.. Wish it was like the M5 rear wheel biased with the xdrive option would be perfect. Not sure why they went front wheel though.. but I'd def test drive one when/if it comes out. To me the heart of BMW really is manual rear wheel drive. But they wouldn't survive in the market now

I'd imagine the X1M will be AWD only, but nevertheless it is based on a FWD architecture.

I have a modified '14 X1 x-drive 3.5i with downpipe, chargepipe and a tune this thing moves wonderfully! I'm actually looking forward to this m, obviously depending on what engine they end up putting there!

Know it's been said by a few of you guys, but I just cannot believe this thing gets sign off, yet we can't get a G81 in the States. It literally makes your head shake.

Why not ask the guys who actually own M cars, what it is they want? I'd be confident X1M isn't the most common answer.

They just want to play it safe I guess. I'd buy something quirky like an M2 Shooting Brake (a new clown shoe) in a heartbeat. But I have no interest whatsoever in an X1M. I'm a mad man I suppose.

I'm like, 'X1, what the hell is that?' Had to Google it, turns out I had a couple as loaners, that's how forgettable the thing is, a re skinned Mini Cooper or something.
Can the X1M be a cool car? Sure, but it would have to be such a departure from the base car that I just don't think it's possible. 30/70 split, high revving high horsepower motor, proper transmission, its possible, just not likely.

Can you give an example for the "better and cheaper" competition? Because I test drove quite a few and found the X1 to be the best. I guess I missed something.

BMW went for front wheel drive architecture (UKL) for their entry level cars because it is simpler (and therefore cheaper) to build and offers better packaging (ie. more space inside and for luggage). They have also pointed out market research stating that 90% of their customers for entry level cars had not been aware (or care for that matter) if their cars are front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. So, they have decided to go front wheel drive with transverse engines (and took some flak from fanboys (who wouldn't have bought X1s or Active Tourers in first place, so that didn't matter commercially).

Obviously, using M5 trick xdrive in X1M is impossible for both technical (incompatible front drive platform design) and commercial (cost of M5 tech designed for CLAR platform) reasons. Not sure why you have any doubts regarding that matter to be honest.

I don't see any reason why you would want a RWD SUV. The only advantage of the RWD is better weight balance and cornering at high speeds, which is irelevant with an SUV. Space, price and practicality are much more important for that segment.

M version makes no sense indeed, but we already have the X3/4/5/6 Ms so there is no surprise. I am sure the X1M will be better to drive than the X6M, albeit the FWD platform.

Perhaps but then are you happy and prepared for M division and BMW to just end and cease to exist.

M has never historically made a BEV but it had to happen right or it's all over?

let’s not start with this “blasphemous” nonsense. GLA/GLB AMG are on FWD-based platforms and so is RS Q3. Many good reasons for making smaller vehicles FWD-biased.

A hybrid system with the 35i B48 engine would be pretty cool.
