Now granted they gotten better over the years, but only after mass recalls from other manufacturers were happening.
Part of this was getting the airbags, I was notified before 2016 on my 2013 M3 that the airbag needed to be replaced but they had no stock. I was constantly updated and was actually offered that BMW would make some payments on the car while I waited.

I had a 2006 330i that I long sold way before 2016 and I am still being notified about that thing for years.

So maybe they were not the first, but they were definitely not ignoring it.

Ah, many of you are so quick to judge and dismiss these owners of older bmws, but what you don’t know is that for someone like me who has a well kept ‘01 e39 m5 that not all vehicles fell into the recall. As a ‘01 owner I am not covered but ‘02+ we covered under the recall even though the ‘01s were impacted.

I bought a 2003 330i last year as a stop gap car for my G80 to arrive. First thing I did was this recall, I was made very aware of it from the carfax to the PPI.

When I had the e46s I got contacted via email and snailmail from multiple dealers multiple times to get the airbags fixed. BMW definitely tried to make sure everyone knew.

For me it was a nice chance to get the car checked out and get a free carwash (they don't seem to do the free carwash anymore though)

I could see someone with an hourly 9to5 job potentially not wanting to take the time to bring their car in or worrying that there would be some other things that BMW wants to charge for a guess but BMW made it pretty easy.... I think they would probably even give a loaner for this.

It seems like one last chance to get the word out to people that should already have known.

Of course my father called me very concerned to tell me about it (it was nice of him but he doesn't realize that he is out of the loop and this is all known). So perhaps some other BMW owner lives under a rock and this last notice could save them...

Like most clickbait you need to the article to see if it is only for original airbags or if there is a problem with cars that have already been fixed. Even then it is really only inferred by the statements about airbag age and not stated explicitly...

So really it is best to check the car VIN for recalls and everyone should do it from time to time.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 4, 2023… In the interest of customer safety, BMW of North America has pro-actively issued an immediate Do Not Drive warning for approximately 90,000 2000-2006 BMW 3 Series (E46) including M3, 2000-2003 5 Series (E39) including M5, and 2000-2004 X5s (E53) equipped with certain driver’s front airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. These vehicles have already been included in several Takata-related recalls; however, despite intense customer outreach efforts by BMW since 2016, they remain unrepaired and, as the airbag inflators age further, the risk of serious injury or death increases. Therefore, to reemphasize the seriousness of the situation, the decision was made to escalate the recall to a Do Not Drive order. Owners of affected BMWs that have not had their vehicles inspected and repaired should not consider them safe to drive.

Notification emails will be sent to owners of these vehicles starting in May with letters to follow in June.

These vehicles were manufactured with airbag inflators that contain a propellant that breaks down after long-term exposure to temperature fluctuations and humidity. If the vehicle is involved in a crash and the driver’s airbag deploys, the metal airbag inflator can rupture, sending razor-sharp shrapnel towards the [...]
Even though this post states 2000-2006 I own a 2011 e82 128i with the same recall, I’ve been troubleshooting a crank no start issue since long before I’ve been notified of the recall and the car has remained parked in my driveway, I live in a state where my sulev warranty is not covered and have had to do a lot of work to my car repairing and replacing parts at a considerable expense to myself, These parts are specifically covered under sulev warranty it would be nice if bmw could step up and cover these repairs nationwide instead of taking advantage of states with no emissions controls to cut costs. I’ll be taking care of my recalls at the local bmw stealership after I can manage to get it running again.

Is this limited to cars in the USA? Are there no cars outside of the country with this problem?

Hmm interesting. My 2002 E39 530i should be one of the vehicles in this recall but nothing is showing when I put in the VIN.

I wonder if some of the E39 airbags were made by another company?

Originally intended only for the E39s with the M-sport wheel from the 530-on with Sport Package. I believe they later expanded the scope only because so many had put that later wheel on earlier cars or those without the Sport package. My 2002 530i Sport/Premium had the recall years ago.

Oh got it. My car does not have sport package so it has the 4 spoke wheel.

This airbag shouldn’t have been defective I’m guessing?

Many cars were impacted. Everyone should check for recalls on their VIN and not rely on year/option/model generalizations.

At least it doesn't have the Takata airbag that is the subject of this recall.
