E89 Z4 28i Tuning and Modifications

Hi

I can't find any information that is up to date on what sort of tuning/mods are popular or that are even available for these cars. I'm interested in running a tune as well as getting a FMIC. If anyone has any information I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

There are lots of options for tunes and FMIC upgrades. The trick is that it's the engine you care about, not the car model. Z4s are relatively rare and there's not a lot specifically for the Z4. But the N20 engine in your Z4 is the same as in the 328i and there are thousands of them that have been modded. Search for "BMW N20 tune" and "BMW N20 FMIC".

Both Dinan and Burger Motorsports offer inline tuners. ARM and VRSF both offer FMIC options.

Thanks for the reply. I know that it is the N20 engine and that it's in the 328i and even some mini coopers if i'm not mistaken. The thing is that when I am looking at most of the tuning options they list what chassis they are available for and almost always the N20 option doesn't include the E89 or Z4 in their description. That leads me to my next question of how do you know if the parts will fit or work. I would hate to buy a tune for a 328i and then some of the pins are different or something like that.

Things like exhaust downpipes have to be specific for the E89..I used the VSRF and Evolution Werks sports cat ones…

FMICs like Wagner fit the E89 too..

LSDs like Quaife are ok…lots of other mods are easily done on the N20 E89..

I assume N20 bolt on boxes fit the 28i..

You can get a nice uprated Mitsubishi turbo if you can find a good US tuner..I understand that unfortunately the N20 need some wires on its DME toggling to do a flash tune so need a physical tuner to be present..
