BMW wants your EV to sound like a ‘Batman’ movie

Hans Zimmer has teamed up with the German automaker to create the sounds of the future

Composer Hans Zimmer working with BMW on a new sound for its electric vehicles.BMW

Film soundtrack virtuoso Hans Zimmer has partnered up with BMW to create the sounds of electric cars for the future, to keep drivers as connected to their electric vehicle as they are their gas-powered ones.

One of the greatest advantages to having an electric car is that it doesn’t make any noise, making for a more relaxing and luxurious drive.

For some, though, the lack of sound is a detriment to the driving experience, and if BMW is going to claim it’s still building “The Ultimate Driving Machine,” it’s going to have to do something about the sounds that its electric cars make.

Enter Hans Zimmer, who is partnering up with Renzo Vitale, acoustic engineer and sound designer at the BMW Group, to create the sound for the BMW Vision M NEXT.

“We want to get BMW IconicSounds Electric in position for customers who value emotional sound,” said Jens Thiemer, senior vice-president BMW Brand. “With BMW IconicSounds Electric they will be able to experience the joy of driving with all their senses.”

For his part, the composer behind the Dark Knight Batman soundtrack says BMW is in his blood. “I have always been a BMW enthusiast. As a kid, I used to recognize my mother coming home by the sound of her BMW,” said Zimmer.

“I am thrilled to get the chance to design the sound of future electric BMW’s and create emotion for the future electric driving experience.”

So Hans Zimmer is essentially going to create the sound that future generations of electric cars will make—that’s pretty cool. If Zimmer can come up with a sound that even comes close to igniting as much passion as a 3.0-litre BMW straight-six, we’ll be seriously impressed.

Pretty soon the theme to Miami Vice will come on as you accelerate in your EV, Tesla, or electric BMW

Hans is a great composer. Enjoyed a lot of his work over the years. Especially in The Dark Knight and COD:MW2

I want a list of sounds that I can scroll through ranging from a Lambo V12 to a Mazda 13B. Might as well throw in some spaceship sounds while they're at it.

Cetacean whale calls anyone? Twilight zone theme. I have that in my library.

Maybe they will set up electric cars so you can use your own songs or ringtones. Or better yet for BMW, a new profit center selling the tones like Apple does.

I can see it now, download your custom engine sound tone(s) from the BMW market in iDrive! Anything from a Formula 1 car, big-iron V8, steam locomotive, or even a V-twin Harley.

First thing that came to my mind is Inception. That scene where he the machine says it's not possible and the guy says no, it's necessary.

I can imagine that music coming on as you go for that risky overtake

EVs are already loud enough. All the legit cars on the road use reduction boxes and wouldn't be silent anyway since moving thru the air and running tires over tarmac both make noise. Fuck the blind lobby and the Hollywood car noise lobby.

They used Formula 1 sounds for the Pod Racer in Star Wars so why not?
It would be neat if you could down load it like an app to whatever you want your car to sound like. Instead of ring tone, it will be your car tone.

Hans Zimmer designed the sound for BMW VISION M NEXT

Quote:
BMW unveiled some of its plans for electric vehicles earlier this week, saying that it would debut 25 electric vehicles by 2023, as some nifty concepts, like its Motorrad Vision DC Roadster motorcycle and the sleek BMW Vision M NEXT concept sports car. The company decided to launch a website (via TechCrunch) to have some fun with its futuristic-looking EV, which included getting Blade Runner 2049 composer Hans Zimmer to develop a science fiction-like sound for it.

The car does look like something out of a cyberpunk movie or video game, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it pops up as part of a product placement deal with some Hollywood studio in the next couple of years. EVs don’t produce any engine noise, so companies have been working out how to give them some sort of sound profile, either to warn pedestrians of their presence, or to reassure drivers who miss the sound of a gas engine. Some manufacturers — like Jaguar or Harley Davidson — have given their vehicles their own futuristic-sounding engine noise.

BMW is leaning into that science fiction feel with this car. As a composer, Zimmer is well-known for his work on films like Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy, and of course, Blade Runner 2049 (along with Benjamin Wallfisch). Along with BMW sound designer Renzo Vitale, he produced a sound for the car that feels right out of a film — a low whine that sounds like something like a cross between what a spaceship feels like it ought to sound like, and the classic THX deep note sound test.

The company has some other fun things for aspiring cyberpunk car owners to play with — literally. It produced a model for anyone with a 3D printer to print up one of their own, as well as files to print up a poster for your bedroom.
