Difference between 35is and 35i with M Package

I am looking at several z4s. There is one at a local dealer that is a 35i with the M-Package.

Is the only difference the HP difference between the 35is and 35i engine?

The 35is also has more torque and an overboost function. Also the exhaust sound is better on the 35is. Aside from the engine the 35is for US market has bigger brakes, I believe. Other differences are cosmetic.

It depends on the year. Certain things there exclusive/standard on the 35is in 2011 became standard on the 35i towards the production end in 2016. If I wanted to tune, I’d go with the 35i [because the 3.5is is ALREADY tuned]... but if I didn’t want to tune I’d go with the 3.5is. Also, the 35i is the only way to get the stick.

I have a 2012 Z4 3.5iS... VERY happy. The dual clutch on this car is amazing. MAKE SURE YOU BUY A WARRANTY!!

35IS cost a considerable amount extra over 35i when new. What i noticed when choosing mine was that 35is-s are usually less well equipped because of that. Buyer had a choice to go with the IS or dump the same money into options and get a fully optioned out car for example. Of course my opinion is a big generalization and there are exeptions.

The extra power of the IS, you can get alot more than that with a simple stage 1 tune in the 35i. Get a better equipped 35i, add a tune and you have all the options and power. Thats what i did.

I suppose that was true year 1 [2011], but by the end of the run I believe the 3.5iS was fully loaded as standard. My 2012 has every. Single. Option. Other than parking sensors.

Either way, I’d go with the 3.5iS, for no reason other than that’s what I have and I love mine. It’s the first automatic I’ve enjoyed driving [amazing dual clutch].

My 2012 35is came with every single option available at the time. That’s how I ordered it. Tracked it’s delivery as it arrived by boat to the US. I figured if I was going to spend that much, I wasn’t going to settle for what was available on the lot.

Differences aside from the tuning:

Exhaust (a bit louder)
Wheels
Technology, comfort , & cold weather packages are already included on the 35is by default
Rear diffuser is painted to match the color of the car instead of just black
Ever so slightly bigger brakes for US market (not 100% on this one)
Gauge cluster says 35is sdrive lol

Yes i was looking at earlier production years 2009-2011. Of course there may be differencies between USA and EU market offers and packages too. I was looking to buy within the whole EU and looked through most of Europes listings. I live in the eastern edge of EU and domestically there are not many Z4-s in my country. If i remember correctly it was 17 e89 z4s when i had mine shipped here. Now its around 25 cars in our small country (half are n54 powered) 3-4 years later.
Anyway i could not find a very well optioned IS. All were mildly optioned or missing something i did not want to be without. At least it was so in the price range i was looking in. So i found a 2009 z4 35i in Berlin that was fully optioned out apart from adaptive headlights and smokers package.
It had everything: m adaptive suspension, dual clutch, idrive with navigation and all the tech goodies, best hifi audio, electric sports seats, extended leather on dash and doors, rain sensor, parking sensors front and pack, wind deflector, lighting pack, storage pack, comfort access, heated steering wheel, and even a garage door opener built into the mirror (i have electric gates in many places so that came really handy). Was hard to choose an IS over that options list. IF i had upped my price range at least 6000 eur or more then maybe i could have found an IS worth considering. Did not seem worth it.

One thing i did miss when choosing my car: Apparently in 2010 bluetooth module was upgraded to have music via bluetooth capability, Mine has only phone capabality and have to use Aux jack for music. Tried buying a newer iphone connector cable with lightning jack and that did not work either only older 30 pin connector works. Not a big deal as idrive has a hard drive for music storage but if i had known that fact i would have preferred 2010 onwards cars. All in all im still years later very happy with my car and cant seem to find anything to replace it with. This ones a keeper.

Ivory white Extended leather was not available on the 35iS.
