Most failures are not the result of poor maintenance or build

It seems that the peripheral components, sourced outside BMW are not all designed for long life. This in turn is the result of poor quality control, and design, and testing of incoming parts.
It also seems like a German thing. Porsche is not exempt either believe me.
I think that parts are designed to the original warranty. They build for the first owner buyer and give him a generous warranty. They are said to be complicated high tech cars but that is now true of pretty much all cars. The owners manual for my Japanese daily driver is over 600 pages and there is another one of 500 pages for the nav and multimedia The car can drive for miles without touching the wheel. It can tell me how much fuel is in it and I can close the windows and lock it from another state with a phone app.
It is about a different business model. Bmw et al make more profit per car than anyone else and they are the second most valuable car company after Toyota.
Buy the warranty and mentally build that cost into the price of the car or make a bet and live with it.

For me, my worry was the DCT. I was told they don't repair... only replace.

I found my '15 for sale privately, and I insisted that they sell it to me through my dealer (they took my manual '11 35i in trade and sold it in a day!)... that way the dealer could put on the 3 year/160,000 km CPO warranty. That cost me about $4000 Canadian tax in.

DCT... Roof...

I don't do more than 4-5k km's per year on it, but didn't want to take a chance.

If I had a lot of problems with a particular car manufacturer, I would stop buying that make! There are too many other quality companies out there. That said, my 2011 runs like a top, well, except the top! I have had a well documented top issue ( in the TOP ISSUES thread). The top issue was preventable with a little awareness of issues and diligence on my part.
I chose to not buy an extended warranty because in the past, I just donated money to warranty companies. No warranty payable problems.

If any one is looking, CNA National is incredible and have approved everything I’ve thrown their way...they disputed two repairs for legitimate reasons but approved both once the shop explained further.

Think they’ve paid out close to $15k over two years, with another $4934 in repairs happening Friday. [Rear light assembly, center steering column bearing and electronic module replacement].

*Edit: Apparently they only sell at POS through dealerships. Sorry folks.

I'm re-waking an old thread with an added question.

I have a 2014 Z4, CPO'd. CPO expired on 9/12/19. On 9/11/19, CEL lit up. I called my local BMW dealer (they were still open, but it was the afternoon) and couldn't get through. Checked online on the "MY BMW" site, saw that the warranty was up on 9/12/19, so I booked an online appointment for my car, and had it in at 7:40am on 9/12/19. BMW SA states that the 9/12/19 date is the "No warranty available date" rather than an "expiration date" as "My BMW" defines it. He says it expired at 12:01am on 9/12/19, and he's refusing to cover.

Does anyone have any experience with last minute issues on their warranty? The "MY BMW" system continued to mark me as "GREEN" and "ACTIVE" for the entirety of 9/12/19, and then turned "RED" and "EXPIRED" on 9/13/19.

Using simple logic, since the car went into service at "some time" on 9/12/13 (though presumably after 9a, given the sales department hours). That the earliest hour that would fulfill 6 full years would be 9a on the date, not 12:01a.

Would love to hear anyone else's experience here. I've had 6 BMWs, and 2 Minis... I'm hopeful BMW will be reasonable here.

Thank you for your time!

Jesus Christ man! There is a common thing in these cases called "good will" and if BMW won't honor a claim for a car that is one day out of warranty then something is terribly wrong (like the world has tilted on its axis!). Go around the dealer and scream bloody murder to BMW NA. What you describe is just a plain ridiculous response!

Thank you! Yes, I was quite surprised at the initial response. I must say that, after pressuring them a little more, they have decided to cover the issue—which is great news for me, as in the diagnostic process, they've identified a turbo waste gate failure as well.

So good news: BMW's goodwill is alive and well.

Anyone else experiencing faulty waste gate @ 40,000mi? Other than this incident, I've only had a bad Adaptive-M suspension issue. It was a challenge to find a 6-speed e89; I've been planning on keeping her for a few more years... hoping that's not a bad plan!
