Is the 296 wheel cracking issue over now?

From reading through past threads, it sounds like BMW made the wheels stronger starting arouind 2012. I'm looking at a 2016 right now and it is spec'd with 296 wheels. Do the newer ones crack like the 09-12 version did, or was that issue resolved before 2016?

I'm sure it was resolved by then, but someone will be along with more direct knowledge of that subject ot confirm it.

Read something about revised 296 too. But... Shouldnt there then be a new revised partnumber for the uprgraded wheel from BMW? In OEM catalog i only see one product code originating from 2009 and still the same. So was the strengthening done in secret? Usually if there is a newer better part its going to have new part number that go with it? Injectors current product code is from 2013 for example.

Thats why im a little sceptical on a fix for these wheels.

And believe me i wish there was one. Have fixed cracks in my rear 296 style wheels twice now during 4 years of ownership. Not cheap doing it right with paint etc.
Next time im going with something aftermarket. Dont like BMW 313 M double spoke style wheels. They are said to be stronger though. Really like Avangarde M510 style wheels.

People talk about cracks being runflat tires fault. Well.. first time i had my wheels done i got rid of runflats and put Michelins on. 2 years later saw cracks developing again. So that does not help either.

Of course some roads are bad in my area. Most are smooth and nice, but there are places where roads havent been repaved for years and only have had minor fixes done. I try to avoid bad roads but sometimes you just cant.

I guess they aren't nearly as popular, but if you think the roads are bad enough to stress crack your 296's you might want to look at the twisted five spoke 295s.

Had a very similar wheel on my 335i (the 59622) and drove it all over the Port of Tacoma with no damage...heavy semi tractor-trailer road, with potholes to match. Good strong wheel. My new-to-me 35is has the 295, IMO still a great looking OEM wheel.

Thanks for the tip. 5 spoke wheels seem stronger. Have a set of 276 for winter. In smaller size of course and they just take the beating. No cracks, rarely need to rebalance them. I dont even think about them when driving. On 296 i drive like my wheels are made of glass. Always thinking about the damage.

That couldn’t be much fun; life being as short as it is. 🤔

Thats why im considering a new set of wheels... Dont want to deal with it again.
And its not so bad. On smooth, fresh roads i dont think about it and have all my fun, but when road gets bumpy and half bad i tend to slow down to a crawl to spare the wheels. People behind sometimes cant take it, get road rage and decide to pass me in anger.

Probably going to get these. Not crazy expensive set. And reviews are ok.
