A6A5 Error - Can I Watch the Live Parameters via INPA?

2009 E89. Getting a A6A5 error (back glass will close but not fully shut).

Can I use INPA to watch the roof parameters (switch settings, voltage etc..) during roof opening to see which switch/harness is the trouble spot?

Carly decodes the A6A5 as "supply voltage of the end position sensors/supply position sensor/supply limit sensors/ start hood open with fins in segment2 and hood locks/@/supply voltage of the position sensors"

Could be the lock motor in the roof above your head. Have picture somewhere, try to find it.
https://e89.zpost.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1683927483

Speed reference is driving above nominal speed roof unlocked...possibly.
Might be right side window frame lock hole with switch inside.

Ok, so, I removed the headliner (killing some bodywork rivets in the process… a nightmare to do with the top completely locked)!

But, here’s some pictures:

The center lock motor looks like it’s in perfect condition
https://ibb.co/0XNrV5T

Left hook seems to be in the right position:
https://ibb.co/txDKGqp

Same for the right hook:
https://ibb.co/7vNT2hV

Of course the rear hinge is locked:
https://ibb.co/whxFMtG

I’m just not sure about the « Might be right side window frame lock hole with switch inside » you are talking about, can you give me more informations?

Of course if anyone have an idea, I would appreciate it

Best regards,
Renan

Hey!

New update!

I've found an ISTA version, installed it on a standalone computer only for this purpose, buyed the correct cable to dial it.
After few hours of setting it up (an "interesting" experience if you ask me), it did work.

So I search through it, found a way to trigger power windows (hardtop was considered not properly locked, so windows and trunk didn't worked), and playing with softclose (linked to CTM module) did open the trunk.

After few test, I suspected my battery was the reason of all of this.

(since the beginning my roof was not considered as locked, so the majestic "bong" was going on and on and on... until after playing with ISTA, it did stoped to bong for few miles, but unfortunately it came back)

Ordered one, received it today, replaced it, used MHD to register it, and.... nothing changed...!

So! Here is the new situation:

ISTA is focusing on the CTM module: https://ibb.co/MS6WsHP

Here is the complete description you can find on A6A5 error: https://ibb.co/R7MVvfh

It says it could be a short circuit on connector X200 (did not found where this one is, or connector X13039 (center connector on CTM module): https://ibb.co/tHzmBSd

Unfortunately, I can't open the trunk anymore, so, if I'm lucky enough to gain access (of course, european car, so can't pull the emergency exit inside as it not exist), I will try to check every power supply cable on CTM module connectors....

Once again, if anyone have an idea, I would appreciate it

Best regards,
Renan

New update (and, hopefully, close from my side)

The very next day, my trunk was unlocked (without anything more than faith in me,myself and I…), so I did access to the CTM, unpluged everything, put it out, took a picture of it (mine has a SW 6.50, but it looks like there’s a loooooot of different version, unfortunately I didn’t found any information about this…), put it back replugged everything.

But, I had a new error code, about everything related to the hydrolic system…
So I changed the salmon relays, but it didn’t change anything…

The day after, I’ve decided to remove the CTM once again to check all the connectors, once done, hydrolic system was ok!
But still, A6A5 error was there…

So, I tried to open the roof while moving the cables lines around (did worked everytime one Hall sensor start to failed), but nothing worked…
But as always when you’ve spent a lot of time in the car, it shutdown itself, so I turn it back on and the roof start moving!!!

I put a box behind to inspect all the cables, did not found anything wrong aside of some « free cables » lying around from my last repairs
So I decided to make it look cleaner and hold them together with tape
Once done, I tried to open completely the roof and hear a « crack » at the moment roof 2 is lying on roof 1, and the bong stating it will not move anymore

After a quick check up on ISTA, A96D, roof 2 shell right hall sensor default
I checked all the cables and found the connecteur of one right sensor cracked open (it did not passed on the right of the structure but through the structure because of the taped « free cables »), so I removed it by cutting before and after the connector and soldered the cables directly
Once done everything worked as expected

My opinion on this, is the connector already had previous troubles and worked intermittently, my mistake did solved this mystery…!

So, if you have the A6A5 error, check all the connectors even hall sensor connectors!

It’s now sorted out, and I don’t know in US, but dealerships in France are pretty bad, they will advise you to change the hardtop electrical harness for about 2k€ without labor first… but they will not do any other diagnosis…
So yes, I personally prefer to do the diag by myself with the same software tools

RenanV,

My apologies, but I just realized I never responded to your question from 11-May.

We fiddled around with the wiring on the passenger side (US car) and replaced some broken wiring.

Hey Gobbell, that's okay, the thread was more than a year old, I understand.

Well it's kind of the same here, same side, but instead of a hall sensor "traditionnal" issue, it just return a different error code (just like yours), and mine was a connector issue.

Hope it will save others Z4 owners

Just came across this because I have the same code. Not much around about this one. I consider myself an expert on this CTM module by now and fixing broken wires and sensors on my 30i for three years. I'm stuck on this code.

It appeared after I had put the roof all the way down into the trunk and the trunk shut back properly. The mechanical process of having the roof down is done but the computer doesn't know that. I can't open the soft close trunk door with my Foxwell device or get to the emergency trunk open latch inside because now the roof is in the way.

Interested in that software you used Renan to get the soft close open. Could you tell me where to find that?

Hey Richard! Sorry for the late reply, just came back from holidays!
You have the same problem I had but the exact opposite, mine was when I had to close it.
Check EVERY connections from the hardtop electrical harness to the different
hall sensors.

But yes, at first you'll need to gain access to the boot.
I have "found" an ISTA-D version on a website, with a boat sailing (if you know what I mean), installed in a laptop dedicated to this.
You'll need the correct USB-OBD cable, and set up ISTA-D correctly (it's really a PITA...), then you'll need to be used to it, it's powerfull but you'll need to understand how it works.

Sometimes it allow you to open the softclose, sometimes it won't... but you'll hear it move.
Of course, the boot opening option is in the CTM module!

Good luck to you!
