The roof cannot be opened on Z4 E89 2009

Hello everyone, I'm new here, I'm from Chile. My name is Alonso.

A friend of mine has a 2009 Z4 E89 that she recently bought and after about 2 weeks of driving the roof stopped opening properly.

The problem started when she closed it for the last time and the small rear windows did not close automatically. The roof stayed closed but now it doesn't open and the rear windows stayed open.

I am an electronic engineer but I don't have much experience in cars, I had a ford, now I have a KIA, I don't have a specialized scanner for BMW either, I only have a miserable ELM 327 ODB2.

But I have some idea, at least I can reason. But I need the keys to success.

The red led of the roof open and close buttons is blinking and there is also a RED colored telltale in the shape of a window, that indicates an error of some part of the roof mechanism. I still don't understand if it is completely hydraulic or electric.

In the service manual it is not very understandable, at least for me, I can't find any unlocking sequence or any procedure to verify what is happening.

So I found this forum and I know there is a topic related to the maintenance of the roof system, but I think this z4 is about something different.

I ask for your help, to anyone who has gone through the same problem.

Great question you asked me.

I just asked my friend and she says those windows aren't working either. The windows are up and not responding to the down control. The entire pilot door push button panel is not working.

what do you think about it?

You need a proper bmw diagnostic tool to understand what’s going on..such as ISTA or Protool..

I assume the battery is less than 6 years old and fully charged?

The roof is extremely complex with a hydraulic motor and electric motor latches..
