Smart Top Module

After reading about this and getting replies from another thread, this is something I will definitely look into. Is it an easy install? Do you guys recommend I wait till after the warranty expires on the car? Will installing this void my warranty?

I suspect plugging in just about anything would void a warranty, technically. But that said it is a plug and play setup, and can be easily removed. Personally I would not be worried about warranty. I've not heard of anyone having issues with the SmartTop and side-effects with the car.

Installation is not hard. It's in the trunk on the passenger side. You have to uncover the harness area and basically follow the instructions to plug the harness inline with the BMW factory controller. I want to say it was a 20-30 minute exercise, not having a clue what I was doing and going methodically slow. No special skills were necessary.

Hope that helps,

Filippo

Thanks. You convinced me. I have a question though. I recently purchased "Carly" and haven't used it yet. Can I do the same thing with Carly instead of buying the module?

Yes and No. Some of them you can, however, the key fob open/close is not one of them, nor the one-touch open from the inside button either.

FYI The Key Fob open(not the close or the one touch) functionality is codeable because I had it coded on my car by a specialist. You can also code the ability to open and close it while driving.

Correct. Since those features were on EU cars we can enable them here with coding.

US DOT laws are screwing us on the tech side.

I have no idea why we can not have anti-dazzle, remove the body reflectors since most add them to the lamp assemblies now.

We also don't get the remote opening and closing of stuff due to lawyers suing. Tops, Hatches, Windows....

As high tech as the US wants to be, we have so many bureaucrats that are holding us back.

Yes we are not smart enough to operate a sophisticated car. They require a ludicrous redundant brake light in the middle which cannot be allowed to be obscured by working the top mechanism while underway. The Germans are behind on remote starters because they were too dangerous. Probably the same for back-up cams.
Surprised that the chime alarm doesn't sound the whole time we are driving, but wait, in Japan it rang loudly if you exceeded the speed limit. In France the government decided everything, even the gear ratios. Meanwhile the EPA , oh nevermind! \But it would be nice if we could escape in our own roadster.

Just removed a fully functioning module from a 2014 E89 Z4 as the contract lease is up. I'm in the UK, but shipping to US wouldn't be too costly.

PM me if you are interested, looking for around $250 + shipping.
