CarPlay - 2014 models and up?
Anyone else hoping that BMW makes CarPlay available for (at least slightly) older models? My E89 being a 2014 model, I'd think all that would be required is a simple software update. I don't care about having a dedicated physical button for it in the car, assigning one of the 6 programmable buttons to launch CarPlay would be simple enough.
Seems like MB is going this route, hope BMW does the same! |

I hope so too, but doubt it because I don't think BMW is currently listed as an iOS partner. BMW has invested a lot into iDrive and is considered by some publications to be the "infotainment market leader" in the segment, so I'd GUESS they would be cautious / resistant to this partnership.

BMW is mentioned in the Apple press release bringing CarPlay into their models "down the road":

I doubt it. It has been more than an year since iPhone 5 was introduced. It has been discontinued and replaced by 5S/C. But we still don't have a snap-in that works with iPhone 5x. The snap-in that was released last year works with latest models only and requires some options. It didn't work with my 2011 E89. I was told that another snap-in will be released in Jan 2014. But it is not available yet. Just yesterday I configured a X1 and it seems the snap-in that can be ordered with X1 works with iPhone 4/4s only. For some reason BMW is far behind other manufacturers.

what does the snap in give that is better than plugging iPhone in via USB?
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. For mb the drive kit for iPhone costs $599 and replaces a lot of the things in the $3000 multimedia package. Car makers will need to find another way to make $ from us... |

BMW says snap-in provides better reception :-) Also it is better to have iPhone in the snap-in than a loose cable hanging out. MB's "Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone" looks far more advanced than BMWs 'Connected" App. I hope BMW rewrites the App adding new features like MB.

I say unlikely. BMW would not sell any Nav options if you could run Apple Maps on your iDrive. that's big money they'd lose.

I won't bore you with the details but I think the BMW apps and third party apps, based on my experience with 335, are at least equal to the MB, based on the demo I am trying to find a GLA45 with that idrive kit to demo, and I will let you know if I am able to do an in-car vs. in-car comparison |

The high cost of in dash units compared to using a portable, plus you can take the portable with you to other autos. The high cost of updating maps. Most portable's are offering free updates. Most have a smartphone that you can use native maps or download TomTom or Gamin which also offer free updates. This is why auto makers are doing integrated systems like BMW's iDrive. It offers more than just Nav. |

As a follow up: I don't think there's any doubt CarPlay will be in BMWs, and there's a good chance that will happen this year. Apple has listed them as a future partner (along with almost every other manufacturer in the world save Chrysler Fiat) and BMW and Apple have a good history together.
I'm just wondering if a software update will allow us to access it in our cars, assuming our version of iDrive is the same as the remainder of the model run (which, if you have an LCI car like I do, 2014 or above, should be the case). It will be silly if you can get it on a 2015 Z4 with identical physical hardware/buttons/screen/etc and not on a 2014. |

We'll have to wait and see. F30 has different iDrive hardware going from 2013 to 2014 and it wasn't even an LCI year
