Antenna clarification

While researching, I've found that some people said that the long external antenna is only for AM and some said that it's 1 of 2 for FM. Which is correct?

I want to replace the ugly long antenna, but I do not want to lose any FM signal.

I'm considering the typcial stubby antenna or just filling it in with some sort of plug if it won't affect FM as I never listen to AM.

TIA

(I just bought a 2011 35i 6MT this past Friday, so I've got a lot to learn still.)

I have the BMW stubby antenna. I haven't noticed any loss of signal and I only listen to FM. It looks better and you don't keep bumping into it like the long one.

Yea, I got the BMW one too…my area could just suck though.

It's possible. I've lived in areas with horrible reception even with a full 1/4 wave antenna. Fortunately, I now live in FL where there aren't a lot of hills or obstructions. I usually get 50-60 miles before I start to lose the signal.
