BMW Z4 E89 trunk issues CTM module

Hi,

I wish somebody can help me out with this,

I have an E89 Z4 2009 and I did try to open up my car roof top today and surprise!....not working anymore...

I have the Autel scanner device, plugged it in and it gave me a CTM (control top module) fault. I took that module out of its place, unplugged it and took the electronic device out of its box to see if it smells like burned circuits but the whole device seems to be OK but not sure 100 % if it is fucked up yet!

The problem is that I closed the trunk with the CTM device outside of the boot.

Now I have zero access to the inside of the trunk and the switch inside my car that unlocks the trunk panel doesn't work anymore due to the fact that I realized that the switch works in parallel with the CTM module. I don't have the ski boot option either.

So, anybody can help me out with this please?

P.S. the trunk isn't locked up totally with the electric motor in but it is at its safety position so there is no way to lift it up

I really need a MIRACLE

tks in advance

Any luck yet? I swapped out an allegedly defective CTM with a new one, but it still needs to be programmed. You might try checking out this site if you have not already. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...epair-manuals/

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

My first post in this Forum so, Hello everyone and Happy New year. I don't want to Hijack this post but have a similar issue with locked trunk/boot and request assistance please.

I am also interested on how to gain access to the trunk without a ski access hole/panel. I have a 2009 Z4 E89 Sdrive 3.5i. I have an issue with the roof and now cannot gain access to the rear trunk/ boot. What happend, on pressing the roof open switch in the centre console, the windows went down, the rear roof panel would open but only about 5 inches, then an error occurs. “Roof movement impaired”. Turning off the engine the hydraulic pressure dropped and the roof went down but did not lock. Starting the engine again allowed me to press the roof down button and it locked closed.

I took the car to a workshop and we did a diagnostic check and an error came up with “Roof Panel 2 micro switch closed” Code A69D (this is the right micro switch). We managed to get the roof open as before but again only 5 inches. Both left and right micro switches were electrical tested and showed no issues.

Now my problem starts. As before turning off the engine the roof dropped down, start the car again and pressing the roof close button it locked the rear roof panel down however, the roof open button is now flashing Red and when you drive away the caution light on the dash shows a Red Roof symbol, and a warning “Roof not locked" on the centre display screen and an annoying chime however, the roof is firmly shut and will not work.

I now cannot access the boot. We tried to override the fault and this allows the comfort access to the boot to operate and the boot lid rises about 1 cm and then locks again. After this it is firmly shut.

The remote and internal boot release does not work and basically, I cannot get in the boot.

I have three speakers behind the seats and I tried removing the top centre one but behind is a steel wall.

There is an emergency pull release in the boot and I have researched so much from this and other forums on how to reach this from inside the car. It seems ok if you have ski access panel but my car does not.

I too need a Miracle. Any help would be most appreciated.

@1) AFAIK there is an option in INPA.

@2) No programming is required when you change a CTM. But you need the correct CTM depending on the number of external valves at your hydraulic pump (3 valves before 03/2012, 4 valves as of 03/2012)

@3) There are broken wires in the roof shell, micro switches and hall sensors never fail. Access to the trunc is only possible according @1, but doesn't really help in your case.

The original emergency release in the trunc is only to support those guys who sleep in the trunc.

Thanks RobbiZ4

So I have been thinking, if some cars come fitted with a ski compartment and others don't, what is behind the panel between the seats if no ski compartment is fitted? is there a blanking plate or is it a solid piece of metal. If I make a hole in the panel from inside the car and later put a dummy speaker cover to cover the hole, would this be possible?

Also if I do gain access to the boot area would pulling the emergency release do the trick. I refer to my first post, I can reset the error code the boot opens 1 cm then closes again.

If not then can you take the rear roof panel off with the roof in the (up) closed position?

To code or not to code ...

First, sorry to BMWZ4SDRIVE35I2009 for completely hijacking your thread!
Second, thanks to RobbiZ4 for your post on z4-forum about pulling the fuse for the amp to alleviate the gong sound!

Onto coding the CTM or lack thereof:

My Z4 specs are Model Z4 30I (USA) Prod Date 2010-06-18

The initial reason that I thought that my new replacement CTM required coding is that my indy local BMW shop indicated that it was required. Then I saw this article and the last part of the article indicates that post replacement, the next step is carry out vehicle programming / coding.
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...dules/8IzgzsqS

According to realoem the CTM part is 61359281723 for my car via VIN
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=61_2226

It looks like this part is bilaterally exchangeable via realoem https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...&q=61359281723

So I ordered it from ECS Tuning
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...e/61359281723/

The original CTM that came out of car is marked:
61.35 09221135-01
Helbako DE 55892110
101600026 8239
HW 002
SW 05.10.02
2310

Replacement CTM presently installed in car is marked:
61.35 09281723-01
Helbako DE 55892110
172710036 5212
HW 003
SW 06.70.00
4017

The error code messages that I get are Instrument cluster KOMBI fault - A688 Coding data incorrect and A568 No message (status soft top convertible 0x27E), reciever instrument panel, transmitter convertible top module.

My code reader can read the ECU info from the new CTM, but the top still doesn't work, the trunk is inaccessible, and the gong sound is driving me nuts.

But other than that, everything is super...

Thanks to RobbiZ4 I now have access to the trunk. For now I have connected a wire to the Emergency release and passed it through to the inside of the car so I can open it by pulling the temporary cable.

Now to get the roof open and change the roof wires, salmon relays and check the CTM.

Emergency release

I read the emergency trunk release was only offered in North America. In any case I think a rope extension to anyplace outside the trunk is a must mod. I will look into this before I wind up in the same boat here.

Happy New Year, my friend. Good to see the resident Z4 top and electronics expert engaged

Since you brought up the hydraulic pump change - I know you have spent a lot of time understanding the whole top system. Do you have thoughts on the difference in pump? BMW has superseded the 3-valve pump with the 4-valve for pre-3/2012 cars. Older cars had a 3-pin connection to the 3-valve pump. Newer cars have a 4-pin connection to the newer 4-valve pump. BMW now supplies everyone the newer 4-valve pump and recommends connecting the 3-pin older car wiring to the 4-pin connector.

My guess is the 4th pin has to do with the 4th valve actuator. Obviously the wiring harness is different. Yet the CTM seems to be unchanged (p/n 61359281723)

As always, thanks for your insights.

Yes. I suppose I was asking a question based on my assumption that BMW went to a 4-valve hydraulic pump because of some benefit. Would you happen to know what the benefit of the newer pump might be? The issue BMW was trying to solve?

Thanks :-)

Update!

So, sorry for the holdup! Another wire fault was discovered after installing the new CTM. Not as a result, per se mind you. After the wire fault was corrected, I understand that the CTM was programmed and the system works without incident! I am still a bit skeptical about trusting it, however, it works!

If it happens again, then I am tempted to pull all of the wire and replace it with heavy duty 12 gage speaker cable. I am probably kidding, but maybe not.

Thanks for your help RobbiZ4!

Typically the wire failure is at a crease - an unfortunate design. Anyone with mechanical/electric experience would surmise that bending a wire and insulation enough times will cause a break.

I don't know that I'd "upgrade" the wire (and that gauge or size is an upgrade).

If there was no other way around this design, at least a sub-harness for the flex area would have allowed a far easier replacement of a wearable item.

It may be a little bit of strain relief could prolong the harness, if one could distribute the flex from occurring at a high tension point.

Well, in Germany we have stopped the activities to develop any improvement.
Reason is, that the hydraulic lines will break as well over the years and can't be replaced separately. So if we have to replace the complete loom after 8 to 15 years, the wires will be replaced as well as there is only one combined loom available as spare part.

Hi Robbie Z4

First of all, I'm not familiar at all with forums in general....So all my apologies!

I still have this issue as my roof doesn't open anymore...because I haven't had the time much to check this out but when I scanned it today what was reported was a fault code "A568" that says ID failure 27EH convertible roof top. And at the very first time I had also a CTM fault code .......

What does that mean?

I also took off the inside part of the roof to take a look at the unlocking system but it didn't reveal anything default but maybe it could be the little motor that doesn't work anymore or maybe also the CTM that is defect, go figure

And when I push down the button to open the roof, first all windows are scrolled down and then nothing and when I release this same button and push it down again, windows are kinda going 1/4 inch further down and then after nothing besides the "tic tic" noises I can hear when I keep pushing down none stop that same button, those noises seem to be coming from the inside doors but not sure

there is nothing "clear" on the web that talks about those codes identifications and no solution either.

Those are the news for now Robbie Z4.

Also the easiest solution to access the locked trunk (especially when for example, the battery is dead and when you don't have the ski bag option), is this

U must have access to compartment located in the center behind the two seats, take out everything inside, get rid of the shelves and then use your fist to punch the top of the plastic panel; this panel is locked from the inside by 2 little plastic locks that u can replace if damaged after it's open. Finally get a metal hanger that you unfold so that it is as long as possible in order to reach out the small green triangle located on the driver's side against the trunk panel, grab it and pull on it, it'll unlock the trunk. If the battery is dead, u might need another person to help u out lifting up the trunk panel while u unlock it.
