1980s BMW Press Adverts - Autocar UK

I was pretty obsessed by cars as a kid so have every copy of Autocar magazine from around August '87 through to December '90.
So Ferrari F40 / Porsche 959 / Lancia Delta Integrale era... and also tail end of E30, E32 launch, E34 launch, Z1 and E31 launches.

Here are the BMW ads from the From August '87 to July '88 in Autocar magazine.
If there's interest - I can take pics of other years.

Autocar: 30 Sept 1987 (obviously issues with perceived price)


Autocar: 21 October 1987 (Alpina!)


Autocar: 28 October 1987 (price still an issue... £10k though!)


Autocar: 16/23 December 1987 (Hartge & Birds!)


Autocar: 16/23 December 1987 (price ad again!)


Autocar: 30 December 1987 (Ultimate driving machine / M3 Touring car!)


Autocar: 27 January 1988 (Not a BMW ad, but the 320i getting a shout out from the Gandini designed Citroen BX. Same fella that did the Countach)


Autocar: 3 February 1988 ('Before they go for a run, they go for a check up.' Also left hand page - my dad was one of those with his money down on an E34 525i)


Autocar: 10 February 1988 (Classifieds section with some dealer ads & BMW UK ads. Personal pick is the private sale of a 1981 BMW M535i for £5k - that'll do nicely. Obviously being sold by a baller... they have a mobile/cell number in 1988!).

Autocar: 20 April 1988 (Not a BMW ad, but an E34 520i being used by Goodyear)


Autocar: 27 April 1988 ('Badge v Bodge')


Autocar: 11 May 1988 ('The new BMW 318i gets him around 20% quicker')


Autocar: 18 May 1988 ('A BMW approved exhaust starts paying you back straightaway')


Autocar: 29 June 1988 (Not a BMW ad, but Fina celebrating that you could win stuff with an M3 and no lead in your petrol)


Autocar: 6 July 1988 ('After the bodybuilding comes the brain transplant.' Utterly gorgeous Alpina B10 ad.)


Autocar: 6 July 1988 (Approved used ad)


Autocar: 20 July 1988 ('We'll cover you against Spanish Tummy and Turkish roads.' Not sure that one would go out the door nowadays!!!)

- E34 Launch
- E36 Preview
- E31 Preview
- F40 v 959 Road test
- Diablo Preview
- XJ220 Preview

Amazing collection of the press adverts! They were really bold and striking back then and got the readers attention very quickly?

This one was always one of my favorites.
(A Mercedes can also bring driving pleasure).

Yeah, remember that one. Nice.

I like the long copy as well as the sharp headlines and images in these - without the internet back then, ads in mags commanded more attention, so the copywriters had more space/time to get a point across / tell a story.

BMW was targeting car enthusiasts then.
Nowadays the press ads (and other ads) are there to target the mass market... so unlikely to talk about oil filters and exhausts.
