Always loved the looks of the E89 but never really liked driving it and I drove every engine from the 23i of the first to the 35is. I think the balance feels a bit better on the new 4cyl turbos. But all in all I just didnt get the feeling right with the Z4 E89. I think the old model, especially the Coupe was a better drivers car hope the new one will go back to this.

I think a tune is necessary to bring the power to weight back. Nothing beats driving a roadster with the top down.

^ That and
The engine sound in SportPlus and
DCT in Sport and
Launch Control and
0-60 mph sub 5 sec.

To be honest, unclear what can be purchased next, except a 718 Boxster, which sums it all, no ?

Dude, wrong car, get w/ the prg, we're talking about the E89 here. "Chevy Nova" lmao, what does that make the 1-series then? Also, what's w/ S2000 drivers? This one douche at a BMW dealership I was visiting just exclaimed out of nowhere "the Z4 is the UGLIEST car I've ever seen!!!". Out of nowhere speaking to some imaginary audience. Talk about crazy inferiority/insecurity issues.

Anyway, onto better discussions...

I'm pretty darn objective. I LOVED the E85/E86 and its compactness. They should've refined it more, w/ the E89's front and revised E85/86 back. Convertible ftn is cool and all but I would give that away for a lighter/more solid coupe. When I was in the mkt the E89 was the best choice available for me so it's all good but like some posters stated, it's a bit too expensive for its stats.

Not looking forward to the Z5 due to the lousy ragtop but we'll see.

Seriously? Wow. When I first saw an E85 I thought it was the most amazing looking car I had ever seen, and I'm still in love with the thing and I still get compliments on its looks from strangers. The E86 with its sloped rear window is simply classic. Re the E89, my local dealer has one out front in Estoril blue with the M sport package and its drop dead gorgeous. The douche at your dealership is definitely that - a douche!

Yup, it was quite bewildering and rendered me speechless because it just came out of left field hahahah. Here I was just sitting in the showroom, minding my own business, I see through the window this dude parking his white S2000 and he stomps inside, takes one look at the Z4 (E89) on display and just screams outta nowhere "THIS CAR IS F*CKING UGLLLLLLLYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". Gets my vote for d-bag of the year. Lock him up in the asylum.

Both Z4s (E85/86 and E89) are very nice-looking cars, so no idea how anyone can say they are UGLY. For some (sane) ppl they might have different tastes and prefer other styles, but to say UGLY? LMAO.

Even Jeremy Clarkson, a reviewer of legendary harshness, said nice things about the look of the E85:

I put that on the fact the compared 35i to Boxster S. How can you compare mid range model(performance wise) to the top of line model. It wasn't apples to apples unfortunately.

fyi....e89 curb weight is 3,362. The 35is is 334/340 pending on who you ask, plus 370 tq.

I think so too, also the std rfts didn't help along w/ the initially vague steering...which somehow inexplicably tightened up (software learning driver's inputs?) to be very accurate. The car's quite tossable and I have great confidence even on tight and uneven tricky roads going at speed.

Dunno about you guys but I never Xshopped w/ the Boxster as the ragtop sucks, so no idea about any price diffs. However, the Cayman was WAAAY outta price range so one cannot consider them to be in the same class. The Porsche better be better as it costs way more.

At this point, you either love the z4 or think its meh. z4 drivers are unique and love art+performance. z4 is absolutely capable of kicking ass with less than 1k on the motor and 2k on suspension.

I've owned 3 M3s (2xe36 and currently a e92) and a bunch of other BMWs, I bought the Z4 for my wife but have absolutely fell in love with it. I love the looks, the motor, the trans and the drive. I'm not sure it would be my pick as a track car, but IMHO it wasn't built for that. The IS motor is so torquey and easy to drive at all RPMs and the DCT shifts flawlessly.

I find myself driving it anytime I get permission to do so.

Well said from someone who should know.

I have owned sports cars cars for quite while. Some of the best ones were not praised by the reviewers. It takes more than an hour or two to appreciate all the benefits of the E89. I tried to like the E85 and the Boxster but they did not work as well for me.
In some cases I personally think that BMW put the wrong tires and wheels on some of the E89s. Also the DCS and the adaptive suspension can sometimes be too smart for their own good. When in doubt, use sport or sport +. The E89 has a learning curve if you want to drive hard, while some others make you look good right away.
Enjoy

Be that as it may, it still weighs a whopping 500lbs more than an E85. It's not a roadster, it's a convertible.

its a convertible roadster with over 300hp. over 360 with a chip and 400 with fmic/downpipes and stage 2. its quite a beast and i'm sure you'll love it if you had it for a while. Also, bitches like z4's and after they ride in one, they love it.

sport+ always unless the wifes in the car. its a tiny car compared to almost any car and a little bigger than the e85. I honestly don't think judging a car based on stock performance is smart. New tires and a chip makes this car a beast. Throw some rims and a drop and its something to keep forever. The one im in has 50k and if the new z5 isn't anything as amazing in terms of looks, then i'm getting a low mileage one to keep for life. I wish I also still had my e85 because of the tossability of it. That car was a true track car in terms of size and handling.

I'm sorry but while I love the way it looks outside and in, it's not a car I could ever love. A roadster for me must be lighter, more athletic, more pared down.

And I'm guessing more people think like me, given the take rate on the E89...

Yep. Someone like you would love it after a kw3, rims, and chip. Most people wouldn't want to be in a luxury roadster due to the inconvenience on wallet/lifestyle/kids/etc. I do agree a true roadster e85/boxster/cayman serve their purpose but they are not comfortable like the e89. If I could, i'd have a f80, z4, and gt4 in my garage

It's definitely heavier but I wish ppl would stop exaggerating things and if you compare similar trims, the gap is even less. Anyway, the 1st and 2nd gens were built for different purposes, even though I prefer lighter/smaller cars in general.

It does feel much heavier due to the size as well.

That's true, it was pointed out to me that the car is the same length as a 4 dr Civic, which is crazy, it looks smaller than it is and it *should've* been smaller like the 1st gen.
