According to the official Z4 catalog page 16/17

it says
Figures are based on a 90% fill up, driver’s weight of 68 kg and 7 kg of luggage.
Unladen weight applies to vehicles with standard equipment. Optional equipment may increase these gures.

that 90% fill up i estmated it is around 50kg/110lb (according to 55Liters of tank and 98octane. 55x90%=49.5L x 0.98=48.51kg)
so 50+68+7=125kg/275lb

then 1580kg-125kg=1455kg/3201lb
E85 3.0si roadster = 1385kg/3047lb

im wondering if that 1385kg/3047lb(bmw.ca) (bmwusa.com = 3086lb) is without fuel, driver's weight and luggage.
If yes, then I think 1455kg/3201lb is good enough.

I have no idea what your talking about last time I checked BMW is still on top of their game in every category and the new models are better then the previous models in all categories so

I must say, I'm just generally unhappy that BMWs keep getting bigger and heavier with more superfluous features, and less sporting intent. Leave that to Mercedes. I'd be happier if BMW took the 350Z-370Z route, and made a smaller, lighter, higher performance car, instead of making a bigger, pretty, more luxurious car and shoe-horning a bigger engine into it.

Perhaps wishful thinking on my part, but I want to see BMW stay focused on what the brand has always been about. World class luxury, class leading size, weight, and sex appeal were not old BMW. We saw distinctive yet handsome styling, and class leading performance, and an absolutely unbeatable blend of fun-to-drive and usability. IMO, we've been seeing some fun-to-drive sacrificed for luxury, size, and flash.

There's a reason that over the past few years you've been seeing Audi's S and RS products doing VERY well in comparison tests against BMW and Mercedes, despite being slower. They are trying to fill the niche BMW once occupied, and they will do so without opposition if BMW keeps making each succesive generation of cars 15% larger, 20% heavier, and 30% more powerful. This is not a winning formula for fun-to-drive, this is a winning formula for building an American Muscle Car.

As someone who changed to a Z4 from a mk2 Miata/MX5 i find it completely reasonable to have a Mazda sportscar owner posting here. I'd say the poster has good taste in cars!

I was frequenting Z4 forums for years before i bought one.

And at least Mazda achieved little in weight gain when moving from the mk2.5 to the NC!

And added... what? 70lbs going with a hardtop without sacrificing a cubic inch of trunk space.

You want a light sports car with power? Turbo a Miata and call it a day. Less than 2600 lbs. and 250-300 h.p. for cheap money. You'll never be bored behind the wheel either.

Its not the Miata thats the only target here, its 2 seater roadsters in general - i've been heckled in a similar way in my Z4.

If yes, then I think 1455kg/3201lb is good enough.

At only 120,000 dollars, the R8, better be amazing!
As far as the RS4, not so amazing. At the VIR track magazine test, the standard 335i coupe beat the RS4 lap time be a decent margin, or about $20,000 less. Plus the 335i gets better fuel economy as an added bonus!

I enjoy finding RS4 owners that want to try and race me in my sedan!

Well, maybe this is right in here but I know a lot of people who prefer the hardtop due to several reasons. I don't like it either but I guess they try to steal some of the SLK-buyers.

Checked the data sheets which can be found on the bmw.com page and all numbers below contain 68kg driver, 90% fill of gas and 7kg luggage. So you can compare. In my opinion they should have stayed with the roadster and coupe solution.

E85 Z4 3.0si roadster manual 1385kg / automatic 1415kg
E85 Z4 3.0si coupé manual 1395kg / automatic 1425kg
E89 Z4 3.0si roadster manual 1490kg / automatic 1505kg
E89 Z4 3.5si roadster manual 1580kg / automatic (DCT) 1600kg

I think from the BMW USA web site that the new Z4 will still undercut the 335i with the same engine, so whilst it may not be as svelte as it could be it's still the lightest option for the N54.

But weight aside, a 0-60 of 5.0 with DCT and a top speed of 150mph is not slow and a near 50/50 weight distribution means it will still handle fine.

The 135i coupe is lighter (I think)...unless you're only talking about the convertibles, then the Z4 is lightest.
