For any Checo fan out there who actually understands race craft, I'd have to say as much as he is an accomplished driver, this race proved beyond any reasonable doubt that Max is a class above him. Can't imagine what his mind is now, assuming he truly aspires to beat him to the WDC, of being beaten by your team mate starting nine places back on a track that is not that easy to overtake on. Now having said that, maybe someone can come up with a sensible reason why Checo got beaten other than Checo not being as good.

Can 100% agree with this though. It's really as simple as that. Don't like it when the media takes his win like in Baku and starts extrapolating unrealistic expectations. But it's the media, that's what they're paid to do.

just drive around in old tires, get what ever position, and then start the race on new tires and drive past everyone!

in my mind the only question about the race today was - on which lap will Max get to P1

Some drivers didn't agree with the pre-race ceremony which went on too long for some but it made no difference to Max if it was 30 minutes or longer.

Soft tyres – These represent the fastest rubber, but are likely to wear out before the harder compounds do.
Medium tyres – This is the compromise compound. It’s usually slower than the softs but faster than hards. And it should last longer than the softs, but not as long as hards!

Perez and Verstappen got basically the same car. Perez started on medium tires from P1 and was driving in so-called 'clean air' from the get-go. Verstappen started on hard tires from P9, had to be cautious during the race start to avoid incidents/damage and subsequently was required to row through traffic on the Miami circuit trailing 8 competitors (Ocon, Leclerc, Russell, Gasly, Magnussen, Sainz, Alonso and Perez), graining his tires in so-called 'dirty air'.

If logic had been respected, at least Perez should have been out of reach for Verstappen. But despite the fact that Perez did not commit any pilot error, got a perfect pitstop (2.2s on lap 20) and did not receive any team order to slow down or to let Verstappen pass, Verstappen caught up with Perez nevertheless and clocked pretty fast laps on worn out hard tires (totaled 46 laps with those and got a 3.1s pitstop). Perez and all other competitors did not underperform, but got into Verstappen's jaws because Verstappen's racing at Miami was simply next level.

Those who despise Verstappen, likely groaning in frustration, can't unsee nor undo the fact that, for the time being, the Dutch chap proves to be an unstoppable force 'hors catégorie' on track. Inevitably there will be future setbacks (DNFs, mistakes and penalties) but no former WDC who ever graced the F1 tracks had immaculate perfect race seasons. Feel free to check their race achievements at the age of 25.

Watching the highlights now and Max made the hards last until lap 46 then passing Checo on the beginning of lap 48 once a lap was used to heat the meds up. He admitted it was a gamble but the most viable way forward from strategist Hannah.
Kudos to Pirelli for making safer '23 tires, especially the hards that are less likely to blow out.
