This thread will be a compatibility chart for the different factory brakes that work on the E89. As many of us know trying to use the search function on this topic gets varied results. And most of time does not answer the question we are looking for.

So instead of having tons of different threads about it I figured it would be easier that have one with a complete list including all the years and also part numbers for the brakes that work.

I will update this thread as people post about what they used to do this upgrade. THIS IS FOR FACTORY UPGRADE PARTS ONLY NO AFTERMARKET KITS.

This will take some time as I have just started to research this and only have very limited findings at this point.

I expect this list to grow a lot as BMW has many different part numbers for the different years.

I should have some info today on the F3x brakes. Im waiting for a shop to get back to me on the parts needed.

So my brake upgrade just got delivered today. They are the sport brakes from the M235i. I will post updates once I get them put on and let you know what was needed for them to work. Also I will be taking a look at the rear brakes and trying to figure out if there is a way to retro fit the electronic e-brake to the sport brakes. I would not hold your breath for a solution, as I doubt I will be able to make it work. But I will at least take a look and see if its possible.

Thanks for the info. Was wondering if there were any reasonably priced kits that were an actual upgrade to the stock 35is fronts?

The sport kits from the newer 2,3,4 series are a upgrade. They provide the same stopping power but do not fade as quickly. So you will have better overall brake function. If you plan on tracking your car they are the better option. But if you only drive on the street then the 35is brakes will be fine.

As someone that keeps looking for this type of upgrade for both aesthetics and/or performance - this is awesome guys, thanks. I'd also be interested in knowing what the performance improvement would be - if possible it would be nice to see some 60-0 stopping distances of stock vs. upgrade.

Personally I'm mainly interested in the realm of the 35is and in an option that would not cause the bypass of the e-brake.

I will be looking into the rear brake/e-brake issue this week. Like I said don't hold ur breath on a solution. I will do my best to try to figure out a way to retro fit it, but I am not sure if I will be able to. It all depends on how it actually is hooked into the rear brake caliper. But I will update If I find anything out.


EDIT: Its a no go on the rear brakes. After looking at it there would need to be a custom caliper designed to house the actuator that controls the caliper for the electronic brake.

No problem. I am still working on other options for the fronts. So far it seems most of the sport brakes on the 1/2/3 series will work on the E89. I will update as I find more.

Just a quick update. The brakes from the M235i work on our cars. I just got done installing a set on my car. It took 1 hour to put them on and bleed them. It is a true plug and play setup. Make sure to use 340mm x 30mm rotors with these brakes.

As I wrote in the other thread, I probably (for sure, but my wife doesn´t know yet...) will be playing with the brakes of my Zet next winter...

As it comes to the rear setup, I will either leave current one in (300x24 mm OEM) or will have it replaced with 35is (324x20 mm) OEM´s components (I simply want to keep the e-brake functional).

Speaking of the fronts, that M235i Sport brakes (SH2NA) setup you built in attracts me a lot (other Performance BBK options mainly consist of 6pot calipers what seems to me a bit overkill for a mere - tuned though - 30i)...

Will you, please, share those M235i parts numbers you gave in? (I presume you went for slotted/holed rotors?)

And I happen to have several subsequent questions:
1. M235i calipers as you got them - were raw or painted? If the latter, which shade?
2. I suspect you left the current 35is caliper carriers (No. 34116773203) in, didn´t you?
3. Did you have to play with DSC settings afterwards (2pot in front instead of a single one)?

And there is one, rather disturbing thought I am having ref. front axle unsprung weight - that is what I am truly quizzical bout... as per ETK, my current OEM set (330x24mm) weights in total someting like 28kgs (60 pounds) inlc. caliper carriers. The M235i setup + 35is carriers (see question #2 above) might be weighting some 33.8 kgs (72 pounds), which means adding 6pounds per wheel of unsprung weight.... I gather this might compromise car´s driving /steering agility quite a bit...

I did not pain them. I left them the blue that they came with. There was no carrier bracket to unbolt as it is built into the caliper just like the stock unit. It was a simple unbolt old and rebolt new. I did not have to play with any settings on the DSC. It was a simple plug and play install.It took about a hour to do, I left the rear calipers stock and upgraded the rotors, I did not want to loose my ebrake. For rotors up front I went with Stoptec dimpled and slotted 340mm. For the rear the only option for the factory size was powerstop drilled and slotted. As for part numbers for the calipers, I never looked up what they were. A quick search should give you the numbers. I have some pics in my albums of the setup. Also the pics above of the blue M sport brakes are identical to the ones I put on. It looks like BMW uses the same brakes for the new 3 series and 2 series with the M sport packages.
