This is something she's been asked for many years. I will have to say a combination of things:

Faith - She is a woman of God and has attended the same church for nearly 80 years!
Active - For as long as I can remember, she has stayed active and literally walked her neighborhood up until she was in her 80s!
Diet - She always insisted on a diet full of green veggies. Low red meat. Low fried or processed foods.
Alcohol, drug and smoke free.

But one pf the things she said to me back around her 90th birthday truly stuck in my head... She said she never really "stressed or worried about anything." She left it in God's hands. It got me to thinking... I never saw her angry. I never heard her and my grandfather (passed away @ 75 from Parkinson's) argue or even yell at each other, ever! Ironically she never drove a car either.
We often hear how, "Stress makes you sick or even kills." Now that I am a middle aged man myself, I truly understand this. We take it for granted as young people. But there have been times where I got really frustrated about something (not recently) and I recall the feeling overcoming my body. It was something I really took to heart. Nowadays, I catch myself and will either stop whatever it is I am doing to stop getting overly angry or stressed and simply switch gears or subjects. It works. So I would definitely encourage anything or anyone that causes you undue or regular stress in your life, to remove it or yourself from that situation. Easier said than done. But at least be very aware of it.

I know that some of the very people who posted in this thread do not see eye to eye with me. or may even not care for my opinions. But yet you have taken the time to express kindness to my Grandmother and our special occasion. You know who you are. I am very grateful to you all.
The elderly often times get overlooked and or forgotten. As a Caregiver, I have become a better person and much more responsible as a father, husband and man.

My Great Grandma was also a very strong believer. She was the strongest person I've ever known. When they told her she was terminal she said that's fine and was ready to see the Lord and be back with my great grandpa. She was upbeat until the very end, most peaceful death. My Great great grandma, her mother, was according to my mom the most spiritual person she ever met. She had a super natural experience in an apple orchard in the 1800s that completely changed her. She died with a smile on her face my mother said. They have her Bible, amazing to see all the notes and how worn it is. Thinking of all of this makes me realize how I really should get back on track!

That's awesome. Sending birthday wishes and more years to come!

My grandma passed away a few weeks short of 90, and being a WWII veteran the stories she had were simply amazing. That generation of people were truly the greatest in my opinion. She was the salt of the earth, very classy, and would never say a bad thing about anyone. It's sad to think there aren't many left from this great generation.

This.

We didn't do this with my uncle and regret it to this day. He fought in Italy and Africa during WWII and always had the best stories.

We will do it with my father.
Fantastic suggestion!!

I share the same sentiment as grandma. I try not to let things bother me. Eat healthy, and stay away from drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. The world is going through some dire challenges at the moment. Let’s take this time to enjoy the little things in life. Keep things simple, less is more. Pick up the phone and call your friends, love ones, forget about texting.

I could not have said this any better. One thing that I focus on in life:
NO REGRETS!
I never want to lose a loved one or even a dear friend and wish I would have called or visited with them more often...

Thank you ALL again for the kind words and sharing in my sentiments for Grandparents!
